Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling #5) by Nalini Singh ~ Review

Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling, #5)Source: Purchased.

Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changeling #5) by Nalini Singh

Separated from her son and forced to create a neural implant that will mean the effective enslavement of her psychically gifted race, Ashaya Aleine is the perfect Psy--cool, calm, emotionless...at least on the surface. Inside, she's fighting a desperate battle to save her son and escape the vicious cold of the PsyNet. Yet when escape comes, it leads not to safety, but to the lethal danger of a sniper's embrace.

DarkRiver sniper Dorian Christensen lost his sister to a Psy killer. Though he lacks the changeling ability to shift into animal form, his leopard lives within. And that leopard's rage at the brutal loss is a clawing darkness that hungers for vengeance. Falling for a Psy has never been on Dorian's agenda. But charged with protecting Ashaya and her son, he discovers that passion has a way of changing the rules...

Reading this series is turning into a long-term thing for me. I read the first four books what feels like forever ago now. Like, I honestly can't remember how long ago it was that I read book 4. And it's not because the series isn't good -- heck no. It's because the series is so dang long, it's intimidating to me to think if binge reading it. So then I take way too long to pick up the next book. And then when I do, I wonder why I didn't do so sooner because the book, just like the series as a whole, is. so. good. Yes, that was the case with Hostage to Pleasure.

Nalini Singh is brilliant. This world she's created? Large and complex, but oh so easy to fall into. The PLOT? Dear goodness. So. Damn. SMART. There are countless threads, both throughout this one book but also throughout the series as a whole, and the way they seem to effortlessly build and work together is something that I am truly in awe of. Singh's writing is out of this world amazing.

Then there's the romance, which is top notch. Dorian and Ashaya have one of the most sensual slow burns I've ever read. Ashaya slowly growing on Dorian, despite Dorian wanting nothing to do with his attraction to her...wow. And Ashaya gradually opening up her emotions to him, feeling safe enough to do so...the growth of trust and affection and tenderness between the two... Nalini Singh is truly a master.

And how could I not mention the other relationships? In Hostage to Pleasure, in particular, there's Ashaya and Dorian's bonds with Keenan. The sweetest, I swear. Ashaya being his mommy. And Dorian being protective and kind and caring. It was beautiful. Then there's the pack dynamics -- the close friendships and die-hard trust. I loved spending time enfolded in their world.

There were only two little things holding the novel back from being perfect for me. One of those things was Amara. I just did not like her plot thread. I have no doubt she'll come into play somehow later, but in this installment her portion was just so over complicated when all I wanted was for her to go away. The other thing is the overall pacing -- it was slow for me. I suspect this is just a me thing (trying not to miss anything, catch all the important tidbits while also enjoying the parts I loved, which were many) but it felt like it took me forever to read this book. I'd read twenty pages but it'd feel like I read at least double that. Which in a way is good -- it meant the pages were jam packed -- but it made my overall reading experience feel like it was dragging.

All that said, Hostage to Pleasure was another amazingly written installment in the Psy-Changeling series. A masterful slow burn romance, brilliant plot and world building, and other lovely relationship dynamics make this a PNR I don't recommend passing on.

4 stars - A brilliant, passionate installment in a series that is not to be missed!

The Wold of Nightwalkers Series by Jacquelyn Frank ~ Review & Giveaway

Welcome to The World of the Nightwalkers!

A spin-off of the Nightwalker series, this series introduces the Bodywalkers.  Quite unique and utterly brilliant, the Bodywalkers are among those that walk the night but for very different reasons.  Their origins come from the greats of the Egyptian age.  I've been craving some good PNR and when this came along, I scooped it up.  I reviewed book one, Forbidden.

Forbidden (The Wold of the Nightwalkers, #1) by Jacquelyn Frank

From New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank comes this first book in The World of the Nightwalkers—an exciting and sensual new spin-off series in which the Bodywalkers, an ancient race of the night, battles the evil forces who prey on them.

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.

When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

My Thoughts:

4 stars -  Such an utterly brilliant world these Bodywalkers!

First Impression...That cover! That definitely got my attention.  I haven't read a lot of paranormal lately and I love PNR so this one had my interest for sure.  I was, also, trying to figure out who this "ancient race of the night" could be.  That had my wanting to read it.

The Story...I've never read this author before.  Since this was a spin-off, I was worried that I would be lost in a complex world but except for the prologue I was perfectly fine.  The prologue is full of clues and a world I don't know.  I did go back and read it after the fact and wasn't as lost.

This story is so unique.  A world that I haven't seen in any other paranormal series before.  Not vampires or shifters though they are part of this world, the Bodywalkers are something different.  I enjoyed learning the lore and having it fall in to place for me.  I will say that this series feels more Urban Fantasy than Paranormal Romance.  The romance is a central issue in the story but it's not a romance book.  This is clearly a first book of a series kinda book.  It builds a great world and sets up for more the story to come.

The Characters...I loved Docia.  From her name to her personality, she is totally quirky.  I really enjoyed that.  Her strength and her love for her brother are put to the test as she is asked to join this world in a very personal way.  The blending had me kinda sad.  I wasn't really excited to "lose" Docia so much but, thankfully, she is still there.  As for Ram, I loved him.  He's a fierce warrior and loyal servant of his king.  He is so not allowed to feel the way he does about Docia and the fact that all his years of devotion were put to the test to resist it was fun to watch.

The Writing...is excellent.  The style is one that I normally struggle to read.  It's from multiple points of view and that changes frequently.  It's third person but we do get to hear what they are thinking.  It takes a lot of writing talent to pull this style off and I really think the author did it.

Could I Put It Down...Mostly, I didn't want to put it down.  I rarely get to read straight through, such is the life a working adult.  There were a few slow spots but mostly, I kept turning the pages.

In The End...The ending was a bit of a twist.  I'm very interested to read the next one and see how that plays out.  Having not read the original series, I'm definitely interested in picking it up.  I think that people who enjoy Urban Fantasy with a side of yummy will enjoy this the most.

The next books in the series....

Forever (The World of the Nightwalkers, #2) by Jacquelyn Frank

After being brought back from death, police officer Jackson Waverly receives the shock of his life: he has become host to a Bodywalker, a spirit that is reborn in flesh and blood, and part of a proud, ancient race that uses its extraordinary gifts to battle dark, evil forces. Jackson’s spirit is a powerful one—none other than the Egyptian pharaoh Menes, who longs to reunite with his eternal love, the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut.

While Menes is obsessed with finding the perfect vessel for his queen, Jackson cannot stop thinking about Dr. Marissa Anderson, the gorgeous precinct shrink who keeps pushing him to confront his grief over the loss of his K-9 partner. But what Marissa really arouses most in Jackson is intense desire, which is exactly what Menes is looking for. To fight a great enemy, pharaoh and queen must join; but to host Hatshepsut, Marissa will first have to die. Fate has given Jackson a profound choice: save Marissa from Menes’ plan or keep an entire species from the brink of extinction.

Forsaken (The World of the Nightwalkers, #3) by Jacquelyn Frank

New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank continues her scorching and sensual new series set in the world of the Nightwalkers, where alluring entities known as Bodywalkers are the vanguards against the raging forces of darkness.

As a mercenary, Leo Alvarez has signed on for a lot—but he never signed on for his best friend becoming host to the soul of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Jackson is now inhabited by a Bodywalker, and Leo is forced to grapple with a realm of supernatural beings far more dangerous than anything he’s ever encountered.

But when Jackson is wounded by an attack from a demon god, Leo must team up with another supernatural creature—a Night Angel—to save his friend from utter destruction. With skin as black as midnight, hair as white as snow, and a body of pure perfection, the Night Angel arouses a burning desire in Leo, even as he refuses to be intimidated by her power—or the power of those who would destroy his friend. An unusual alliance is forged, electrified by sexual temptation, and together the two must unite their strengths to bring down a supreme evil.
