Grave Humor by R. J. Blain ~ Excerpt & Giveaway

Grave Humor
R.J. Blain
(A Magical Romantic Comedy)
Publication date: May 12th 2020
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Paranormal, Romance

Most days, Anwen regrets working at a funeral home despite the good pay. With the residents no longer inclined to stay in their coffins where they belong, she’s got her hands full making sure everyone follows the rules:
In the funeral home, there is no screaming, no murdering, no mutilation, no possessions, no kidnappings, no resurrections, and no cursing of any type. Be quiet and stay polite.
The day Old Man McGregor decides to take a walk and disturbs her peace, Anwen learns there’s a lot more to the basement in the funeral home than a vampire and a handsome gentleman on ice.
If she’s not careful, she’ll learn first-hand why ‘eternally yours’ is the most potent of threats.
Warning: this novel contains romance, humor, bodies, shenanigans, and mythological puppies. Proceed with caution.

Author Bio:
RJ Blain suffers from a Moleskine journal obsession, a pen fixation, and a terrible tendency to pun without warning.
In her spare time, she daydreams about being a spy. Her contingency plan involves tying her best of enemies to spinning wheels and quoting James Bond villains until satisfied.

EXCERPT

Lemon smelled so much better than rot. As far as the restless dead went, Old Man McGregor hadn’t left me with too much of a mess to clean. He’d stayed mostly intact, limiting his oozing to a spot here and there. It took me twenty minutes to erase the evidence he’d gotten out of his coffin and taken a walk.
Five minutes later, Direct Hammel and his merry band of somberly dressed assistants arrived. Why did Direct Hammel need four men to stand around? Most viewings, even the big ones where the whole town showed up, only needed two attendants. The rest of the time, I could handle the work without any help at all.
While the viewings sometimes had upwards of the town’s full three hundred people, I couldn’t think of a single funeral with more than twenty attendees since I’d started working at the place. The old stayed, the young left, and with a world full of magic to discover, who wanted to stay in Sunset, Alabama? If my college fund hadn’t been bled dry on drugs and hookers, I would’ve been on the first bus out along with the other six seniors in my class.
“Any problems?” the director asked, sniffing the air.
I bet he smelled the lemon and wanted to know why I’d been cleaning. “No problems,” I replied. Any other day, Old Man McGregor rising and coming out of his coffin for a chat would’ve counted as a problem, but I was too worn and tired to care. Like with all things, problems were relative. If the restless dead hiding in his coffin decided to cause a problem, I’d back up and watch the fireworks. “I finished my other work for the morning, so I cleaned to make certain everything was ready for the viewing, sir.”
“Good job. Our clients will arrive soon. We’ll handle the rest from here. Mr. McGregor’s family is rather conservative, so if you could handle inventorying and cleaning the preparation and refrigeration rooms, that would be useful. Otherwise, go home.”
I didn’t need a diploma to read the writing on the wall. If I went home, I wouldn’t be invited back to work, which meant someone hadn’t done their job cleaning the basement.
The funeral home went through inspections once a month to keep its license, and we were due to have a government worker poking around the place. Plastering a smile on my face, I nodded. “I’ll be downstairs if you need me, sir.”
“Good. Call the main line if there are any problems.”
Once again, I read the writing on the wall: if I had any problems during the viewing, I would be in need of a new job.
I struggled to maintain a neutral, professional expression. To keep guests from wandering into the restricted parts of the funeral home, Director Hammel locked the stairwell door and turned off the lift. I’d spend the next six hours in the basement. After the surge of restless dead and corpse possessions, the funeral home boasted reinforced lower level walls and doors, fashioned of a mix of concrete and steel to keep the bodies contained should they decide to get up and take a walk.
Fortunately, excluding Old Man McGregor, we only had two bodies in storage, and John Doe had been in our freezer since before I’d been born. If he decided to get up, they’d hear my screams in the next state. While the rules kept changing, one thing stayed the same: the older the corpse, the stronger the undead it became. I hadn’t seen Mr. Doe, but I sometimes heard Director Hammel talk about him in hushed, fearful tones.
Nothing scared Director Hammel except our John Doe.
The other body we had didn’t worry anyone; the vampire wasn’t going anywhere until someone reattached his limbs and revived him with a lot of blood. I wasn’t sure why we kept the vampire on ice, but someone from the CDC came once a month, along with the funeral home inspector, to make sure he remained as alive as an undead got. I’d gotten to take a look at the vampire, as Director Hammel wanted to make certain I knew to avoid the sleepers in the freezer.
All in all, I didn’t care about either corpse. Unless I put my throat to the vampire’s mouth, he couldn’t hurt me. As for John Doe, I wasn’t sure what I thought about him.
While I wanted to curse over my foul luck, I kept smiling, grabbed my purse and coat, and descended into the basement. I made it all of two steps before the lock clicked behind me.
“Asshole,” I muttered, shaking my head and reaching for switches. I flipped three of the five, bathing the stairwell and landing below in a yellowed light. The stench of embalming fluid burned my nose, and I turned on the ventilation fans so I wouldn’t suffocate before the end of the viewing.
When I found out who had left the basement a reeking hell hole, there’d be a third body in the freezer. In prison, I could study and pretend I had a future, and I’d do so on the government’s dime until they kicked me out and made me finish my term doing community service. Curling my lip in a snarl, I stomped down the steps and aimed for the disposal bin meant for the latex gloves. I caught it with my foot and launched the damned thing through the open doorway.
It crashed onto the metal table bolted to the preparation room floor.
“What’s the fucking point of having a three-inch thick containment door if it’s open all the time? I’m surrounded by brain-dead idiots.”
“Yes, you are,” a husky, deep voice replied. “I was wondering who they’d sacrifice to me first. I knew the scarecrow would hide, but I thought he’d betray the whiner first. How disappointing.”

Excerpt:

“I’m sending you to get this artifact, Dorian. We’re no’ thieves. Unless we have no other choice. I’d like to see if you can buy it from the mortal first. If that doesna work, then get it any way you can.”
Dorian watched as Con turned on his heel and walked from the cavern. He might not have been involved in the many battles or daily machinations of the ongoing conflicts with their enemies, but that didn’t mean Dorian hadn’t felt the anger and desolation when his brethren had lost or the contentment and delight when they won.
In every word Con uttered while detailing everything, Dorian perceived his worry, his unease. But more than that, Dorian felt the fear that ran through Dreagan at their new nemesis.
Whoever this band of Dark and Light Fae and drough and mie Druid, their first strike had been substantial. The ramifications of the Kings touching the wooden dragon still caused ripples, and likely would for some time.
Dorian rolled his shoulders. His muscles were stiff from his time sleeping. Whether in dragon or human form, he needed to remember who he was.
He’d be happy to remain in his true form forever, but his King called for him. And that meant Dorian was going to have to interact with the very beings he wanted to wipe from the realm.
Slowly, he walked to the water. His enhanced eyesight didn’t need the aid of any light as he peered over the edge to look at himself.
As soon as he saw his face, he cringed and jerked back. He wasn’t prepared for this. But there wasn’t time for him to get ready.
Dorian blew out a breath. The last time he had been outside his mountain was after he watched his dragons cross the dragon bridge to a new realm and helped to bind Ulrik’s magic.
He’d been inconsolable, his world shattered in the space of a heartbeat. Everything he’d loved, everything he’d lived for had been taken from him. Viciously. Cruelly.
Ruthlessly.
Con had brought him to his mountain because Con knew if Dorian was left alone that he would finish what Ulrik had begun.
There wasn’t a day that went by that Dorian didn’t dream of his life before the humans.
Or plot their demise.
Now Con wanted him out in the world. Dorian would get what was needed to battle their new foes, but every chance he got, he would take out a mortal.
They didn’t belong on this realm. It wasn’t theirs. It belonged to the dragons.
And the dragons would take it back.
Soon. Very soon.

BOOK TRAILER

---------------------

I've really enjoyed this series but I was thinking while I read this one, what if I didn't know this world.  No problem.  The author does a great job of making a complex world clear for a taste of the Dark Kings world while telling a great story about Dorian and Alexandra.

I love 1001 Dark Nights novellas!  They're such a great way to check out a series without committing to one.  And while I always enjoy them, this one did a better job than most of entertaining me.  There's just so much packed into a novella.

We know nothing about Dorian in this series.  He's been sleeping in his mountain through the first 13 books.  So he's a great choice for this book.  He is woken by Con to complete an important mission.  He has to fight his hatred for humans and get the job done.  But I was very pleased with how he dealt with it and how much personal growth happens for this character.

Of course, Alexandra is the reason for that growth.  I love her.  She's reserved despite being a very public figure.  She craves living in a quiet place where she isn't the center of everyone's notice.  The need for bodyguards and the attempts on her life is certainly something she could do without.  And her past boyfriend was a total nightmare.  No wonder she doesn't date.  But when Dorian wins the auction for a date with her, her life changes forever.

The romance is fast and scorching.  It didn't feel rushed to me, just right actually.  And so smoking hot.  They are two halves of a whole.  It's clear and I loved it.  When the shocking climax comes, I felt the pain for both of them.  But the story wasn't done.  The author does a great job of giving a short summary of the world building for the series and takes things a step further.  It had me wanting to go back and read more from this series.

I adore this author and I especially love this world.  This particular novella does such a great job of giving readers a delicious taste of this dragon world.  If you've ever wanted to read this series, this is a great place to decide.

Time to go back and read the ones I'm behind on.  Adore this series.

Commence Operation Bang Each Other Out of Our Systems, because that was all it was—unfinished business.

Monty

“Ow!”

“Shit. You okay?”

“Im good, just hit my head on the soap dispenser. Dont stop.

The stranger chuckles. “Didnt plan on it, Monty.”

I giggle when he says my name, partially because Im a little tipsy, and partially because it reminds me of when he first said it.

“Hey, Im Monty.”

“Hi Monty. Wanna see my python?”

He uttered the words with a cocky grin, and I was a goner.

In my defense, that was the best pickup line out of all the guys tonight, and since Im determined to enjoy myself since starting fresh in a new town, here I am: perched on the bathroom counter at a dive bar named Lolas with a guy I only just met.

Hes a new adventure, and Im enjoying the exploration.

His touch is gentle, yet firm in the best of ways. Large hands grasp my waist, holding tight enough for him to leave red marks but not bruise. Its sexy, makes me feel safe, warm, alive.

Or that could be his lips roaming over my jaw. His stubble rakes over my skin, and I live for this moment.

Ill be the first to admit this isnt me. Im not this girl. I dont make out with strangers. Heck, I dont even pick up guys in bars. Im your average Mary Jane, the girl next door.

I know it and I own it.

I dont have a single come hither bone in my body, but there was something about the way this mans eyes slid over me that made me feel worthy of his kisses.

Or its the booze talking.

Yeah, it could be the booze.

His lips travel down the side of my neck and I lean into him, enjoying the contact more than I probably should. The kisses are slow and wet and perfect. He runs a hand up my back and into my hair, wrapping it around his fingers and pulling lightly until my head is tilted just where he wants it.

He runs his nose along the column of my neck, and Im so stupid over this, thinking its the hottest thing ever.

“You smell like beer and sweat and flowers.” A soft kiss. “Why flowers?” he mutters.

I dont answer him.

I cant.

Hes captured my mouth with his again.

He moves his lips slowly against mine, learning and teasing, seeing what he can get away with, seeing how we fit together.

The hand that was entwined in my hair is now cupping my face, and the pressure hes putting on my jaw is…hot. Its not too much, but its not enough either.

His tongue finds its way inside my mouth and I nearly come apart. Such finesse. Certainty.

This guy knows how to kiss.

I have been writing since I was sixteen years old and love to write both horror and romantic suspense. I think there have been many influences within my life that has set me on the path that I can not help but walk. A few of those names consist of Karen Rose, Lisa Gardener, Nora Roberts, Cynthia Eden, Catherine Anderson, Laura Griffin, Andrea Kane, and Lisa Jackson, just to name a few. This list by no means defines by own writing but they have indeed influenced my desire to live outside of my own world and to create the thrill of my dreams. I live on 40 + acres in the SHOW ME state with my six year old daughter, with the wonderful addition of four dogs and a handful of chickens. The weather is unpredictable, but the surrounding beauty of the country helps my creativity as I sit on my top deck with my laptop and coffee close by.

MoonlightSeduction mm c

The de Vincent brothers are back—and so is the intrigue that surrounds them—in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s sizzling new novel . . .

Nicolette Bresson never thought she’d return to the de Vincents’ bayou compound. It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up . . . and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. Avoiding Gabe should be easy, especially when so much of Nikki’s time is spent trying not to be stabbed in the back by the malicious hangers-on who frequent the mansion. But escaping memories of Gabe, much less his smoking-hot presence, is harder than expected—especially since he seems determined to be in Nikki’s space as much as possible.
Gabriel spent years beating himself up over his last encounter with Nikki. He’d wanted her then, but for reasons that were bad for both of them. Things have now changed. Gabe sees more than a girl he’s known forever; he sees a smart, talented, and heartbreakingly beautiful woman . . . one who’s being stalked from the shadows. Now, Gabe will do anything to keep Nikki safe—and to stop the de Vincent curse from striking again.

He moved forward, maybe a foot or two, but stopped like one would if they were approaching a rabid dog. A heartbeat passed. “Your hair . . .” He tilted his head to the side. “It’s different.”
“Yeah, it is.” Her hair used to be a rather dull medium brown, but then she found this amazing hair stylist in Tuscaloosa and turned her brown hair into this array of blondes and browns, using some weird technique called balayage. “It’s basically just highlights and stuff.” “Stuff.”
His gaze flickered over the bun. Uncomfortable, she scanned the kitchen. “And my hair is longer. A lot longer.”
His brows lifted.
Was she really telling him the length of her hair? This was the most strained conversation she’d ever had in her life. And that was, well, it was sad. She peeked at him. It used to not be this way. Back before . . . well, before she ruined everything, he’d be teasing her and asking about her college. He’d be talking to her like he could actually stand being in the same room with her.
She needed this conversation to be over like it was yesterday and she also needed to figure out how she could work here and not run into Gabe. The house was big enough that it should be possible. “I need to get back to—”
“Planting your face against the over door?”
Her shoulders slumped. “Actually, I need to finish the potatoes. So, if you’ll excuse me.” She started to turn away, praying that he’d just leave.
“That’s it? That’s all you have to say to me? Because I have a lot I need to say to you,” he said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d see you here again.”
Nikki’s spine stiffened like steel had been poured into it. Oh God. Her throat spasmed.
“We need to talk.”
“No we don’t,” she said quickly. “We do not need to talk about anything.”
“Bullshit,” he snapped, and his voice was so much closer that she turned to him on instinct.
Gabe was now at the edge of the massive island, only two or three feet from her. She stepped back into the counter. Her heart thundered in her chest as her gaze flicked to the kitchen door.
“No one is coming near here,” he said as if reading her mind. Her gaze flew back to his. “Dev is in his office on the second floor, in a meeting and your father is out with the landscaper. No one is going to hear us.”
A weird mixture of sensations assaulted her. One was a chill that skated down her spine. The other was a tight, hot shiver that danced over her skin.
Gabe kept coming at her, not stopping until he was right in front of her, separated by a few inches. She sucked in air, catching the crisp, clean scent of his cologne. It reminded her of storms, of that night.
That was the last thing she wanted to be reminded of.
Like his brother, he was a good head and then some taller than her, so right now, her eyes were fastened to his chest.
Thank God he was wearing a shirt.
“I . . . I don’t want to talk,” she managed to say.
“I do.”
“Gabe—”
“You owe me this.”
Her body jerked as she pressed her lips together. He was right. She owed him a conversation. “Okay.”
There was another beat of silence and then he asked in a voice so low she almost didn’t believe she heard him right.
“Did I hurt you that night?”

I'm a total JLA fan.  While I really enjoyed Moonlight Sins, I had a different reaction to this one.  I loved it.

There is so much going on in this book.  The secrets that were disclosed from the first book and the impact they're having, the freaky house, and the very complex relationship between Gabe and Nik are all just a part of it.  Strange things keep happening to Nikki.  What is going on and who's responsible or it is the house???  This author does a great job of making you wonder.  And it's so fun to try and figure out all the little clues.

As for the characters, most of our time is focused on Gabe and Nikki.  Of course, we see the happy Lucian and Julia.  The scary as all get out Devlin is there with his down right cruel fiancee Sabrina.  Grrrr...I really do not like Sabrina.  Maybe hate is the right word.  And her creepy brother Parker?  He's definitely in the hate zone.  Both of them make me want to reach inside the book and slap them.  As you can see, my emotions are involved, always a good sign.

But the favorite?  It's Gabe.  Yeah, he's doing this yo-yo thing where he says things that make me mad and then he's a sweet as he can be but I still end up loving him.  He's conflicted.  He wants Nik, probably since they saw each other last...yeah that.  No telling on that.  Read it for yourself.  But there are lots of issues.  The ten year difference in their age is the simplest of the issues but Gabe can't seem to get his head wrapped around all of them and figure out what he really wants.  His heart knows.  His mind keeps debating it.  But the thing is that he has the biggest heart and the kindest soul of any of the brothers.  He brings her smoothies and does other really thoughtful things.  The whole...yeah not telling you that either but it's sweet!  And the way he loves her?  Smokin' hot and yummy all mixed together to make him capture my heart.

Nikki is strong and I really admire her willingness to help her mom when it's super hard on her.  Her mom has no idea just how hard it is for her to walk back in the de Vincent estate.  But she does it.  And she isn't this demur little girl that bows her head and does what she's told.  Nope.  She talks back to even the scary Devlin.  I loved that about her.  When she told Gabe to clean his own rooms, I cheered!

Of course, I still have questions.  I had so many at the end of Moonlight Sins.  Some are answered and new ones have joined on the list.  Oh, there's one in particular that I really want to know the answer to.  I NEED book three to find out the truth.  I assume we will finally get all the answers in that book.  Is it January yet?

This is a good one.  If you love to put the pieces together as well has have the sexy nice and hot, then you don't want to miss this one.  I do think you can read it as stand alone.  While you will enjoy it more if you've read Moonlight Sins, there is enough explanation to get by without it.

Don't pass this one by.  Good stuff, right here.
