I just need to make it through this season. I can do that. Hands free, of course. But then there’s that moment, and I know she’s thinking what I’m thinking and, well, yeah. Screw the rules...

I'm a very character driven reader.  These characters were never real to me.  

It's really hard to get to know the characters when there is too much tell and not enough show.  Weeks would go by from one scene to the next with only a sentence to explain some of what happened during that time.  I don't always have issues with that but I have to have already made a connection to the characters.  That wasn't the case with this book.  These characters are just flat words on a page that I just don't care about. 

Sometimes I questions if the characters would even do something.  I really don't like it when an author forces the characters into things that they just wouldn't normally do.  That happened in this book.  I will admit that it's hard to tell if a character is forced when you don't know them well enough to even like them.  But this book is about a football player.  There are some things that are just a given in that situation.

The whole set-up of the NFL star and a nanny that has a masters in Psychology is just contrived.  Yeah, there's a reason given as to why she would take such a job but I'm not buying it.  This NFL player has had a traumatic experience and his daughter is recovering from that.  The perfect person to understand them both is someone who understands about how the mind deals with lose.  So it just felt too contrived.

Pretty much could have told you where and how this story was going.  Totally predictable.   Well except the idea that the Browns would EVER win the Superbowl.  That is just plan ridiculous.   And while it was nice that everything fell into place for the ending, it just was too easy.  Too predictable.  Boring, really.

About the only thing I can say I enjoyed was the idea of this story playing out in the NFL.  I love sports stories and football is my favorite.  There was a good balance between the story and the sport.  

Reading time is way to precious.  Skip this one.

Wrong Bed, Right Roomate by Rebecca Brooks ~ Review

Coming 1/14/19 from Entangled

I really like the premise of this book.  Not so much the falling into the wrong bed, though that does happen, but the idea that Jessie is the girl no one noticed growing up and Shawn is the one that everyone fell over in high school.  They don't seem like a good fit.  And now Jessie is living her dream job and Shawn is trying to change how everyone sees him as a failure.  Can they possible be right for each other?  His sister doesn't think so.

But somehow the story ended up not quite working.  Don't get me wrong, I read it fast and I was cheering for both of them.  I didn't like Shawn's sister.  I did like the other besties.  I enjoyed how Shawn fell so hard for Jessie.  I loved how Jessie was totally taken by Shawn.  But the problem I had was that it felt...rushed or forced or just missing something.   And it really felt like an adult book about high school characters.  Especially the scene were his sister returns. 

It's a short novel, a mere 200 pages.  There were some parts that were summarized that might have been better if we had some more details.  I would have loved to have a couple of scenes that just weren't there.  

There is character growth in this story.  Shawn is trying to change his representation, trying to be a better person.  Jessie has her life controlled down to the minute.  She doesn't see the need to make a change.  But together they find some middle ground.  I did like that.

I will also say that this book has a lot of hot.  Maybe more than the 200 pages needed.  Maybe there needed to be more description of other things.   But if you enjoy that part of the romance book, then this one has more than it's fair share.

I guess I wanted to like this one more than I did.  I liked parts of it.  I liked Shawn.  I felt for him.  I liked Jessie.  I just wanted something more.  They are new adults but really they still acted like young adults.  

It's definitely a quick read.  And if you like the sexy hot type, then this is a good choice.

So we ask:

WHAT IS THE WORST LIE YOU EVER TOLD?

For me, I have to think about this. I don't lie much for a couple of reasons: 

1. I am a terrible liar. Like, the literal worst. I stumble over my words and my face gets red and it's more embarrassing than effective.

2. I always feel so bad when I lie. Even when it's about things that don't matter, it sticks in my head and rots.

That said, nobody's perfect. Everyone lies sometimes. When the teacher asks, "Did you read the chapter we're covering today?" The answer is not going to be no. 

I'm not sure how to answer about my WORST lie, because all the worst lies I've ever tried to tell have never been believed. But I think my biggest lie is a good review for a book that I did not like but pretended to like because peer pressure. Actually, there are a couple of books I've done that for in the past. I haven't done this in years (I mean, I gave a JLA book 2 stars last year, y'all, you KNOW I'm not lying now) but in my earlier days I was more self conscious, especially when it came to books surrounded by hype.

I won't tell you what those couple of books were, though. I think I'll let you wonder ;)
