Reliquary by Sarah Fine ~ Excerpt

Hey, y'all! Sarah Fine has a new book that just released on June 14th called Reliquary. It sounds SUPER COOL, and I'm so excited to have an excerpt to share with you guys today! Check it out below (along with more info about the book), and let me know what you think! :) ~Jess

Mattie Carver’s engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real—and Ben is hooked. It’s not the stuff of storybooks. It’s wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.

Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler…and her missing fiancé’s estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she’ll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can’t resist.

Excerpt...

The night before everything fell apart was the best of my life—the last purely happy, uncomplicated hours I would ever have. Looking back, I’m amazed by how lies can soothe the soul, quell every fear, blind you to reality in the most pleasant of ways. Not forever, of course. And only if you really want to buy into the illusion. But back then, I did. Even as the truth sharpened its knives and hunted me down, I refused to see it.

I was too worried about whether I’d made enough deviled eggs.

“We really could have had this catered,” Mom said, stopping to rub my back as I balanced each egg half on the platter and then sprinkled them all with paprika.

I blew a lock of curly hair off my forehead. Outside I could hear laughter and the faint caress of Lake Michigan against the shore. “How many people are out there?” I asked, ignoring her comment. “Should I do another dozen?” It’s my engagement party and I want to feed people, I had said. Just appetizers and beer. I’ll be done with plenty of time to spare.

Ugh. My mother was right. Again.

Her soft hands closed over my wrists. “We’ll have plenty. But Mattie, you need to be on the deck with Ben, not stuck in the kitchen. Your guests want to congratulate you—that’s the whole point of the party! Let me finish this up.” She held up my hands and glanced at my fingernails, short but coated with a bright-orange polish that set off my mustard-yellow dress and strawberry blond hair. “You’ll ruin these if you keep this up.” Smiling, she grabbed a dishrag and wiped a smear of mayonnaise off my ring finger, and the diamond that now lived there sparkled in the light. “Look—you’ve already done all the prep on the perperoncini wraps and the bruschetta. I’ve got this covered. Go.”

I glanced out to where my fiancé (fiancé!) was standing, a bottle of beer in one hand, flashing that smile that could melt glaciers. His hair ruffled in the breeze off the lake, the sun glinting off golden strands. I bit my lip and stared. Seriously—how had I gotten so lucky? “You sure, Mom? I feel terrible leaving you with all this work.”

She chuckled and shook her head. “Honey, that’s my job.”

My mind skipped through memories of all the times she’d rescued me from my own ambitious schemes. Like when I’d taken on decorations for the senior prom (DIY string chandeliers are harder than they look, damn you, Internet!), or the time I’d decided that I totally had time to make three hundred cupcakes for my sorority’s homecoming party despite the fact that I had to cheer in the actual homecoming game. “I guess I’m the queen of biting off more than I can chew.” I sighed. “Sorry.”

She pulled me into a hug, brushing my unruly hair off my face. “It’s just one of your many charming qualities.” She inclined her head toward Ben, and when I turned, he was watching the two of us, his honey-brown eyes full of affection and invitation. “And clearly Ben thinks so, too.”
“Remind him of that after he takes a look at the supply closet at the clinic, okay?” I nodded as he beckoned me to come outside. “I might have tried to install a new shelving system while he was fishing with Dad yesterday.” Ben had told me that it was my practice, too, even though he was the vet and I was just the lab tech and assistant. I’d wanted to show him I could pull my weight. And I could…but unfortunately, the new shelving system could not.

I explained the catastrophe that had once been Ben’s tidy closet. Mom just said, “We can get Dad over there to take a look at it tomorrow morning. He gets a kick out of fixing other people’s messes.” One of the reasons my dad was the most popular real estate agent in Sheboygan was that he actually seemed to enjoy patching holes and installing crown molding, and it certainly helped with sales.

“You guys are the best parents. I don’t deserve you.”

Mom handed me the egg platter. “Pay me back by making sure Grandpa’s having a decent time, okay?”

“You got it.” I grinned. “I’m a ray of sunshine. I even dressed the part.” I kissed her cheek and scooted through the open sliding door to the deck, where I set the platter on a table already crowded with food.

A warm hand closed over my arm. “Finally,” Ben said, his voice full of gentle teasing.

I leaned my head back and let him kiss me, savoring the taste of taste of beer on his lips. “Mm. I think I read somewhere that anticipation is a fine aphrodisiac.”

He laughed, and it accentuated the adorable dimple in his right cheek. “Is that what this is? I thought maybe you were avoiding me because of the supply closet.”

“You weren’t scheduled to go in until tomorrow!”

His arm slid around my waist, and he pulled me against his muscular body. “I had to go pick up some eyedrops for Barley.” His aging golden retriever was falling apart at the seams, but Ben was determined to give him a good life for as long as possible. “And it’s okay, really. It’ll be easy to fix.”

I buried my face against his shoulder. “You are amazing.”

He tipped my chin up. “And I’m marrying an amazing woman. Come on. Your friend Chelsea’s just gotten here, and I know you haven’t see her in a while. Also, a couple of your aunts and uncles have already asked me when you’ll appear. We need to greet your guests.”

Your guests.

I laced my fingers with Ben’s and looked out over my parents’ sprawling backyard, crowded with my extended family and everyone from my mother’s book club to my preschool gymnastics coach. Chelsea, my best friend from college, lifted her glass and grinned from her spot at the makeshift bar next to the pool.

“They’re not all mine,” I said quietly. Feeling lame, I waved toward Franz, one of a handful of Ben’s patients (or, rather, the family members of Ben’s patients) I had invited to beef up his part of the guest list.

Ben laughed as Franz waved back enthusiastically, looking a little lost and desperate as he stood among a group of my parents’ church friends. “I’m really flattered he decided to come,” Ben said. “He’s much more comfortable surrounded by books and wine.” A professor of anthropology at University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, Franz had invited us over to his home a time or two, where I spent the evening playing with his dachshund, Lemmie, and Ben and Franz huddled in his library discussing lofty topics they claimed were too boring for me to sit through.
“I’m glad he came, too.” I bit my lip. “But he’s not your family. We could have invited Asa, you know.”

Ben’s grip turned to iron. “You can’t be serious.”

“Come on, Ben. He’s your brother.”

“Listen, even if we could find him, and even if he were sober enough to show up, trust me—you don’t want my brother here.” His jaw clenched over the tremble in his voice. “And I don’t, either. He’s a criminal. A lowlife. He’s—”

“Ben, he’s the only family you’ve got left.” My heart ached for him. His mother had taken off when Ben was only a toddler, and he and Asa had been raised by their father, who had died a few years back. “Weddings bring people together!”

“But with some people, that’s more of a curse than a blessing.”

“You don’t think he’d be happy for you?”

“Mattie, the last time we saw each other, he threatened to kill me.”

What?” My eyes went wide. “You never mentioned that before!”

He bowed his head and shrugged. “It was a long time ago, and I don’t like to talk about it. But Asa’s just…he’s messed up. He’s got rage inside of him. And he’s always been jealous of me. Do you think it would help if he got a good long look at all of this?”

I leaned my head on his shoulder. “I just wish you two could find your way back to each other. Family is important.”

“I’m building a new family, Mattie. And there’s no one I’d rather do it with.” He shoved his left hand in his pocket, and I knew his fingers were running over his lucky agate. Just one of the odd, endearing habits that had made me fall deeper in love with him. I watched his face as he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. And when he opened them, he smiled down at me. His hand rose from his pocket to stroke my cheek. “You are so beautiful,” he murmured.

I shivered with sudden pleasure. His touch was like a drug to me, and I was the happiest of addicts. As his fingertips trailed down my throat, my entire body tingled, and my hands balled in the fabric of his shirt, barely keeping me from sliding my palms up under it to feel his bare skin. “Do you think anyone would notice if we disappeared for a few minutes?”

My old bedroom was a few steps away, and I was already envisioning myself on the bed. His grip on my hips would be bruising and delicious. My body was already slick and soft and hot. It felt like I was one deft touch away from having an orgasm, right there on the deck. Ben’s hand spread across my back, steadying me, and he glanced down at my flushed cheeks with an appreciative grin. “What were you saying about anticipation?”

“Screw it. Or, wait, screw me. That would be even better.”

“If someone doesn’t bring me a damn plate of food, I’m going to starve!” said a gravelly voice to my left.

Ben released me instantly and clasped his hands behind his back, like a little boy caught stealing. My reaction wasn’t much better—I slapped my hands over my warm cheeks and turned toward the source of the complaint. “Grandpa! I-I was just coming to find you.”

Grandpa looked up at me from his wheelchair. Dad had parked him in the corner of the deck so that he could look out over the lawn. His wide-brimmed straw hat shaded his watery, red-rimmed eyes, and his gnarled hands were clawed over the armrests. “Yes, that much was obvious.”

Great. Grandpa had probably heard every word of my scheme to sneak in a quickie with my boyfriend (fiancé!). I blushed from my forehead to my toes. Could I just control myself for once in my life? “What would you like, Grandpa? Summer roll? Deviled eggs?”

“Surprise me.”

Grabbing a plate and a napkin, I listened to Ben doing his best to make nice—and to Grandpa having none of it. I scooped up a few appetizers from each platter and turned just in time to see Ben reaching out to shake Grandpa’s hand. When my grandfather didn’t let go of the armrests, Ben saved face by giving Grandpa’s hand a friendly pat.

Grandpa jerked away like he’d been burned, first glaring at the back of his liver-spotted hand and then up at Ben. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he snapped.

Ben blinked down at his fingers, the shock on his face similar to my own. “I’m…sorry?”

“You should be,” Grandpa growled. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to, boy.”

“Try the eggs!” I said, rushing forward with the plate and nearly tripping in my strappy sandals. Stepping between my gaping fiancé and the tight-lipped old man who for some inexplicable reason had chosen the occasion of my engagement party to lose his mind, I put the plate in Grandpa’s lap because hey, snacks can fix nearly anything. (Despite everything that’s happened, I still believe that.)

“Mattie, I think I’m going to…um…I’m going to go make sure Franz is having a good time,” Ben said.

I threw him and apologetic look over my shoulder. “I’ll be there in a few.”

Grandpa didn’t touch the food. His hands were shaking as I knelt next to him, my sunny skirt fanning around me. “Grandpa,” I said gently. “Are you okay?”

“Don’t take that tone with me,” he said, though his voice had lost its edge. “My hospice nurse uses the same damn voice when I dare to express an opinion about anything other than whether I would or would not care for raisins in my oatmeal.” His tremulous fingers clutched at mine, and he sighed. “Never get old, Mattie.”

“I won’t.” My chest squeezed with regret. Just a few weeks ago, the doctors had announced he only had months to live. He looked okay—apart from the rattling cough that kept him up nights and fatigue and pain meds that made him groggy during too many of his waking hours—but lung cancer was taking him down. After the doctors’ verdict, my parents had shipped him all the way to Wisconsin from his home in Arizona so they could take care of him until the end. They’d said it was the best thing for him, and to my surprise he hadn’t objected. But he didn’t seem happy about it—especially because everyone was tiptoeing around him like he was going to keel over any second. I tried to take a different approach. “Hey. In exchange for not using the you’re-a-crazy-old-man voice, I want to know what just happened with Ben.”

He grunted. “It was nothing.”

“Nothing? You refused to shake my fiancé’s hand! I mean, if you overheard us just now, that was as much my fault as—”

“Mattie, how much do you know about him, really?”

“We’ve been together for three years!”

“That doesn’t mean you know his secrets.”

I frowned. “How about you tell me what you’re getting at?”

Grandpa rubbed at his chest as he looked over at the lawn, where Ben was mingling like a pro. “Ask him.”

Frustration began to creep in. Seriously, he had to pick this night to get all protective of my virtue? They’d spoken for two minutes. What could have gone that wrong that fast? “Grandpa, what did he say to you that has you this upset?”

“Find out everything you can about him. You owe it to yourself.” He turned back to me, his chin trembling. “You and I haven’t spoken much since your grandma died.”

I looked away, ashamed. “I’m sorry. I should have written more.” Or called. Or visited.

“Come have lunch with me tomorrow?”

“I have to work.”

“Tuesday, then.”

“Okay.” I’d have to arrange with Jan, our practice manager, to cover the waiting room during what was usually her lunch break, but that wasn’t anything a box of Girl Scout cookies couldn’t fix.

“Mattie?” Ben called from the lawn. “The girl cousins are here.” His tone said, Help.

My aunt Rena’s four teenage daughters were a handful. I stood up and smoothed my skirt. “I’d better get down there before they stick one of their iPhones in Dad’s speaker dock and turn this into a rave.”

Grandpa squinted at me. “Are you speaking English?”

“Never mind.” I rubbed his shoulder. “Enjoy those eggs.”

I floated over to Ben, the incident already behind me. This was my engagement party, and I was marrying the love of my life. Nothing—and especially not my cranky old grandpa—was going to ruin it.

Madly & Wolfhardt by M. Leighton ~ Review

So before I review Madly & Wolfhardt, I want to do a mini review on the little novella that comes before that book.  This book introduces us to the world of the Mer and to Madly James.

Source:  Purchased the eBook for only $.99

Summary from Goodreads:

Madly is your average nearly-eighteen year old girl—for a princess, that is.

Madly James is thoroughly enjoying her internship in the small town of Slumber when the unthinkable happens—there’s a prison break in Atlas, the magically-protected home of Madly’s race. A traitor has set free eight Lore, the spirits of what humans know as fairy tales, and they are making their way to Slumber to awaken their descendants.

In order to save her home, the lives of her family, and all of humanity, Madly must learn to wield her exceptional powers and recapture the Lore before it’s too late and all is lost. But Madly’s only help are her two best friends and the Sentinel, Jackson Hamilton, that threatens both her heart and her destiny. Madly has loved Jackson as long as she can remember, but he is the one thing even a princess can’t have. Can she resist love to become the queen she was fated to be? Or can she find a way to have both?

This novelette introduces you to Madly and prepares you for the quest of a lifetime

My Thoughts:

This is a short little introduction to the world of Madly and the mer people.  Madly - love that name btw - is of royal blood, princess in line for the throne.  She is strong willed and determined, not willing to sit back and wait to be taken care of by her sentential guards.  I like that about her.  She has a great friendship with Jersey - another fabulous name - and an interesting relationship with her soon to be fiancee, Aiden.  The cast of characters are complete with Jackson, the head sentential in charge of protecting Madly AND the crush Madly has had since age 15.

Only the second mer story I have read, I'm enjoying them more and more.  Why haven't been reading them sooner?  Good question.

I must say that this is the back story for the really fabulous read, Madly & Wolfhardt but I highly recommend that you start with this one.  Madly & Wolfhardt does stand on it's own, but I wanted that little bit of extra story that you get from reading this one.  Check it out for sure.

Madly (Madly, #1)

Now let's look at the main event, shall we.

Source:  The wonderful Heather Self lent me the kindle version, but I may have to purchase my own copy.

My Summary:

Madly is supposed to be concentrating on capturing the escaped lore so that she can rescue her parents in Atlas, but Jackson's return to her life has her very distracted.  He's there to protect her, with his life if necessary - something he is very willing to do.  She's the princess in line for the throne.  A relationship between them is not only inappropriate it's also forbidden.  Madly knows all of this but she can't stop thinking about him sleeping a mere feet from her.  In the mean time, Aiden - Madly's soon to be fiancee - is falling for the human descendant of the very lore they are hunting.  If the relationship issues weren't enough drama, the seers are acting weird.  Can Madly pull it together soon enough to capture Wolfhardt and have a chance to save her parents, or will her heart prevent her from succeeding?

My Thoughts:

4 stars - Sizzling hot romance & fun fishies in this one

As I said, this is only my second venture into a mer story and I'm wondering why I haven't read them in the past.  Thanks so much to Heather, who got me hooked on this one very quickly.  I needed something light and fast to get me past some pretty weighty books I've read lately.  This one fit the bill perfectly.

I love the forbidden love between Madly and Jackson.  There is no real love triangle going on here, which frankly was refreshing.  Aiden is around but he's never really a love interest.  Madly expects to be mated with him in the future but she has no feeling for him beyond brotherly love.  And Jackson?  Well he's the somewhat brooding hunk of a guy who puts his duty above everything else, except perhaps Madly's safety.  His mysterious anger adds to the very male vibes he's throwing off.  I loved the dynamics between them.  So hot and so much fun to read.  If you missed it, here's my Swoon Thursday from last week featuring none other than Madly and Jackson.

I really loved Jersey's silly personality.  Her goofy antics are just what Madly needs a lot of the time, even if the bell is gonna drive her over the edge.  Jersey is Jackson's sister.  She knows her brother's heart and that's important information that she's NOT sharing with Madly - Jersey may have some clam in her!

Aiden is supposed to be Madly's fiancee very soon but that doesn't seem to be working out too well.  I really enjoyed his humor and the great relationship that he and Madly share.  It was so nice not to have a pouting male as the third wheel.

The story was fast paced and had a unexpected twist or two.  I could have read it in an afternoon but I decided to go back and read Madly before I finished this one.

If you love the YA urban fantasy scene, then this one is a must read!

Student Review Exiled by M.R. Merrick + GIVEAWAY reminder

As many of you know, I'm a middle school teacher.  While I teach math, my students are well aware of my passion for reading.  The bookshelf in my classroom is their first clue.  Then I'm always picking up their books and asking them about whether they like it.  Once I get what kind of books they like, then I'm suggesting books to them.  I did that recently.  I loaned Patrick Exiled bu M.R. Merrick.  He soaked it up quickly, finishing his math fast so he could read in my class. =)  I asked him to write a review for the blog and WOW am I glad I did.  Patrick's thoughts about the book ROCK!  He's reading Shift now and has already agreed to review it too.  So enough rambling from me.  Here's Patrick.

Exiled by M.R. Merrick

By Patrick

Recently, I read the book Exiled by M.R. Merrick. The book immediately immerses you into the action of Chase Williams, a teenager exiled from an elite group of magical demon hunters known as the Circle. Exiled with his mother for lack of an elemental power and defiance, the pair lived in a slummy part of the town of Stonewall. With lives plagued by attacks of vampires, shifters, warlocks, and other various underworlders, Chase meets another rogue hunter, Marcus Starkraven, and a half-demon half-hunter named Rayna. Despite their first impressions, Chase and Rayna soon discover more and more about each other than they ever would have expected.

Merrick offers a deep, rich story line with characters easily relatable to any teenager. Iced with the blood and gore every teenager seeks in gruesome detail and packaged in twists and turns, Exiled takes the fantasy genre to a whole new level, setting the bar for future fantasy writers. Personally, my favorite scene was when Vincent and Chase began to fight because it conveyed the way vampires changed in horrendous detail and perfectly exemplified Chase’s bravery when in a dangerous situation.

Any reader, fantasy fan or not, but especially fantasy enthusiasts, will be drooling over Exiled and craving the rest of the books in the Protector series.
What do you think of Patrick's review?

I still have an giveaway going for winner's choice or Exiled or Shift in paperback.  Gonna add an entry for making a comment to Patrick on his review.  Patrick's in my 8th grade honors math class, bet you couldn't tell could ya?  Smart one, he is.  Let him know what you think and add an entry for the giveaway in the rafflecopter below.

Of Poseidon By Anna Banks

Source: Won ARC from YA Sisterhood

My summary:

Emma runs into the immovable chest of Galen at the beach, literally.  Forced to choose how to react, she goes with option 4, peel her check off his chest and apologize for the "casual assault".  Not the best first impression, but Galen is interested in Emma for something besides her lack of coordination.  No, he's looking for the girl that can communicate with fish.  Can that be Emma?  Her eyes are enough to get him wondering but it's the deadly shark attack that has him following her home.  Can Emma be the girl he needs to bring together a divided kingdom under the sea?  Maybe.  But what will he do about the feeling that he has for her?  There is no way they can be together and he better understand that from the beginning.  Too bad his heart wasn't paying attention.

My Thoughts:

5 stars - Fabulous fish story

Haven't read a lot of mermaid stories (sorry Galen - Syrena stories).  If they were all like this one, I'd be reading them ALL.

This book called to me.  I won it so it wasn't something I needed to get read by a certain date, but I couldn't let it sit on my shelf any longer.  Once I started this book, I might as well of cancelled the rest of my life.  It was pretty much a one sitting read.  I did sleep for a few hours but mostly I read it straight through.

The action starts from the first sentence.  "I SMACK into him as if shoved from behind." Then Emma tries how do get out of this situation of having her cheek stuck to his chest in the best way possible.  I thought I'd die laughing before she stepped back and apologized.  Emma is hilarious! That was when I knew I was reading it NOW.  Emma is a strong female character that doesn't put up with being told what to do.  She isn't perfect at taking care of herself but she's gonna try.  Love her fire and her snark.

Galen, Prince of the Syrena, is royal and used to having his orders followed.  Needless to say, Emma doesn't follow them.  Galen is also used to living in the ocean, not among the humans.  So he's not quite sure what "hanging out" is all about.  It's too cute to watch him learn how to survive a high school while chasing Emma.  He is totally unprepared for the attention his good looks bring him.  At one point, he's trying to avoid the female attention he's getting so he calls Rachel and pretends to be flirting with her over the phone.  Rachel is an older human and acting as him mother but the conversation is fabulously funny.  The girls that have become Galen's groupies slowly leave as they hear the conversation.  Loved that scene.

Emma believes Galen could never really be interested in her and Galen believes he can't have Emma even though he wants her very badly.  As a result, the heat between them is constantly on the edge of  exploding making this an amazing paranormal romance novel.

There's some misdirection in this book.  I love that when an author can make me think the book is going one way only to have to go another.  I figured out a little but only just before it happened and was very surprised by a few things.  The story was a perfect balance of action and passion.  The ending was one of those surprises that I thought I knew what was happening and it wasn't.  It was the type of ending that makes me want book 2 NOW! Almost a cliffhanger, this book resolves some but starts a huge new story.

If you enjoy YA, romance, paranormal or all - then this book is a must read!  What an awesome debut for Anna Banks.  Cannot wait to read more from this author.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Source: ARC copy from HarperTeen in exchange for a fair & honest review.

My Summary:

Nikki Beckett's been missing the last six months.  She willing went to the underworld, desperate to rid herself of the emotions that broke her heart into pieces.  In the arms of the gorgeous Cole, Nik's emotions have slowly left her leaving only one face.  A boy's face.  When the feed is over, Nik can't remember much but she does know she has to see that boy again.  So she returns to the surface before she has to return to the underworld for good.  But when the smoldering immortal follows Nik back to the surface, she learns he intents to make her his queen.

My Thoughts:

4 stars - a great read

Start with some pretty unique interpretations of underworld myths, add some hot immortals sucking energy from humans and a devastated teenager and you have a fabulous read.  I loved the world that Brodi build for this book.  I've read a lot of Greek Myth anchored books.  I really enjoy them.  But this one isn't the same old thing with different names.  This world is different enough that I needed to figure things out from the clues given in the book and yet it still had all the things I love about Greek Myth books.

There are strong characters that I really enjoyed.  I will admit that it took me a while to connect with Nik.  She is so empty at the beginning of the book after being in the feed for 100 years that I was like, whatever.  Because of this it took me a little longer to get into this book that normal.  Enter Jack.  Once I connected with Jack, this book took off for me and I loved it.  Jack is this incredibly strong guy that just doesn't give up.  I liked how he was patient with Nik but kept coming back.  I cannot wait to find out what's next for Jack.  As for Cole, I really loved him from the beginning and then sort of thought better of it.  Still like him but he's not Jack.

The plot was tricky.  The scenes traded from before and after the feed relating time to when Nik would have to return to the underworld.  I got impatient with it sometimes but at that same point that Jack captured my heart, the plot did the same.  Then I just flew through the book.

If you like the Greek Myths and the impossible situation kinda books, then this is a great YA book to pick up.

Tiger's Voyage by Colleen Houck

Source: Purchased

My Summary:

Kelsey is living a nightmare.  Her beautiful Ren is back and safe but he can't remember anything that has to do with her.  In fact he feels pain just being around her and even more when he touches her.  Will he even want to be friends with her let alone love her?  Kishan is very willing to be friends but wants to make sure things are over with Ren.  In steps Wes to teach her how to dive.  He is certainly interested.  And then there is Durgan's necklace to find.  It becomes very complicated as she spends time in close quarters aboard the luxury boat with the brothers.  As the search for the necklace moves forward, Kelsey's heart is torn apart as she tries to understand what her heart is telling her.  Will there be anything left of her heart or the brothers when the voyage is over?

My Thoughts:

3 stars - a good read

So I'm team Ren and this book was hard for me.  I love the world that Colleen builds for this series.  I love the tigers and the Indian lure.  It's all very unique.  Tiger's Curse has been my favorite of at the series.  Tiger's Quest broke my heart.  This book was hard to read at least until I got to Lady Silkworm's chapter.  In that chapter I found hope. It allowed me to settle down about the love story and enjoy the quest!  And what a quest it was too.  Five dragons plus the seventh pagoda.  Lots of adventure and drama.  I enjoyed this aspect of the story very much.

****Spoilers below****

Did you hear the "BUT" in my words.  The part of the story that made me crazy was still the love triangle.  Frankly by the end of the book, I wanted to smack Kelsey.  She claims to love both tigers but it's obvious to everyone including her that she loves Ren passionately while what she feels for Kishan is more platonic.  Yet she holds Ren's memory loss against him even though he did it to protect her.  She fears that something else will come between them and she can't risk the pain.  I kept yelling at her that to have that kind of love for even a brief time would be worth the risk of losing it.  She worried that if she chooses Ren and loses him that Kishan will no longer be there for her to fall back on.  Are you kidding me?  Talk about selfish and manipulative.  I rarely get to the point that I don't like a heroine that I have previously cared for but it happened with this book.  I gave the book 3 stars because the rest of the storyline is brilliant but I'm not sure I can take another 500 pages of Kelsey's waffling between the two tigers.  Maybe someone will take pity on me and just tell me who she ends up with and if they managed to break the curse.  Probably not, I'm sure I will read it for Ren's sake.

The Willows: Haven by Hope Collier

My Summary:

Ashton is about to turn eighteen but instead of it being the best day of her life it turns out to be a nightmare. She leaves her party early and finds out her father has had a heart attack and he doesn’t make it. Traveling across country in her BMW to the funeral, she meets Gabe on the side of the road. After accidently running over his bike, she ends up giving him a lift and her life will never be the same. Gabe has such gorgeous eyes, the color of the sea. He’s so mysterious and soon Ashton finds herself forgetting about the boyfriend she left behind. But then the mystery that is Gabe begins to unwind and dangers are hiding at every stop. And since her birthday, Ashton has experienced some strange changes. Who is trying to hurt her? What has her father kept from her? What is she exactly? Who can she trust? What choices does she really have?

My thoughts:

3 1/2 stars – a good read

Okay, I want to like this story. I mean it’s about a group of Fey that doesn’t usually get to be the main character. That makes it unique. And Ashton seems like such a strong character in the beginning pages of the book. She defies her abusive boyfriend to go to her father, who is sick. I thought, you go girl! YAY! But then I became frustrated with the book and I almost quite reading it. After talking about it with a good friend, I decided to keep going and I’m glad I did because the second half of the book was so much better. I’ll get to that, but let’s get my complaints out of the way:

• Instant love – Okay, I know it’s a common theme lately and frankly I don’t usually have an issue with it. I mean, if there is instant attraction and hot chemistry that develops quickly into love then I’m a happy reader. But in this book, Ashton went from walking out on her boyfriend (actually fiancée) to professing her love for a boy she meets on the side of the road within three days. Later I realized that this instant love thing may be part of a Fey thing. Still struggled with it.

• Ashton’s strong character doesn’t hold when it counts. She just let things go without asking such obvious questions that would have helped her puzzle things out. I realize no one could answer those questions but really, she should have been asking them. One time she was presented with the knowledge of who knows what happened to her mother and instead of asking that person, she just never brought it up even though she had lots of chances to do so. It was very frustrating for me.

So now, I guess, you’re wondering about why this book got as high of a rating as it did. Well, I said the second half was better and boy was it ever. I loved the character Kyle. He is well developed and very real to me. It was obvious what his feelings were and that the whole situation was hard on him. He genuinely tired to help Ashton and he seemed very male to me. I hated Kevin, which I think was the point so that means he was well written too. I came to love Ashton. Despite her flaws, stated already, the way she dealt with Ilana was a class act. In fact, the way she faced the impossible situation she found herself in was admirable. This was the best place to see that strong character of hers fully and I liked her then.

As for the plot, there was a lot of action and some very hot romance. It wasn’t clear where things were headed, which I liked. There were even a few twists that were hard to take. While I was sad for Ashton quite often, I was very happy with the ending. I look forward to reading book two. I don’t think I’ll have a sudden love problem in that book. =)

Overall, I enjoyed the book, well the second half of the book. So if you can put aside the instant love issue (chalk it up to a Fey thing – cause it is in this story) and if you like urban fantasy with some pretty smoking hot romance, then you should give this book a chance.
