Captain Heartbreaker by Brighton Walsh ~ Review

Adventure's in Captain Hudson Miller’s blood. For the past ten years, he's spent his days in the sky, serving as a pilot for the Army. But where adventure called him away, something—someone—else is calling him home. On post-deployment leave, he escapes to the one place he hasn’t been since he enlisted: Havenbrook, Mississippi. Hometown of his momma’s peach cobbler, enough memories to last a lifetime, and the only girl who ever left an imprint on his heart.

Mackenna Haven thought she'd have her life figured out by now. Instead, she's a twenty-seven-year-old college drop out who works at her soon-to-be brother-in-law's bar and lives on her parents' land. No husband or kids to her name. Not even a consistent weekend booty call. She's been pretending she's happy working dead-end jobs in an even deader-end town, but she can't stop thinking she was meant for more than this.

After a childhood as best friends and a single weekend exploring more, Mackenna and Hudson haven't seen each other in ten years. But they made a pact that long ago weekend, and Hudson's coming to make good on his promise. Except she has no interest in it or him. After all, he walked away from her once already, and she's not interested in opening her heart and allowing him a second chance at destruction.

This is a friends to lovers, second change kinda book.  But it's also a figuring your life out kinda book.

Mac feels like she doesn't really contribute to the small town of Havenbrook.  A college drop out working at her soon to be brother-in-laws bar, she focuses on all the negative points of her life.  The only man she can see in her life is Hudson but he's the adventurous type that needs his army life.  So Mac is just stuck.

Hudson hasn't been home since he enlisted in the army 10 years ago.  He followed in his father's footsteps and thought to complete his dad's dream of retiring from the army.  But he's doing it for the wrong reason and being home, in Havenbrook, has other ideas of what will make him happy floating to his thoughts.  But he can't get his Kenna on board.  She doesn't want to leave Havenbrook and she's afraid of the long distance relationship.

But life has a way of throwing some curve balls.  That's what happens to Mackenna and Hudson.  Both need to figure out what they really want.  Maybe see what's right in front of their faces.  It's a fun adventure to share with them.

Love these characters.  I've met many of the secondary characters before in a previous book.  It's a charming little town in Mississippi.  Everyone in everyone else's business.  Everyone loving each other.  So fun.

The feel of this books is just happy.  Yes, they are working on figuring out their lives but Mackenna and Hudson together just feels right.  It felt right being in the pages and a great distraction from my own life.

This is a great author to take a chance on.  If you haven't read this series, it's all good.  They can be read stand alone.  Just good stuff.

Willow Haven’s content. Okay, that’s a lie, but she has been trying her damndest. Trouble is, it never sticks. Second oldest in a family her town was named after, she’s always felt the pressure. The only time she didn’t feel that stress had been those blissful months spent in the arms of the resident bad boy. The same one who broke her heart beyond repair when he left without a word.

Life hasn’t come easy for Finn Thomas. He’s had to claw and fight for everything he’s ever had—and truth be told, it hasn’t been much. The only thing that ever came easy for him and made his sorry ass happy was the one girl he loved with all his heart. And the one thing he had no choice but to leave behind.

When an opportunity arises to return to his tiny, southern hometown and open the first bar in a formerly dry county, he jumps at the chance. That won’t win him points with the mayor, who’s hell bent on making Finn’s life a nightmare for sullying his namesake. But too bad for Mayor Haven, Finn’s got his sights set on more than just the town, and this time he won’t be scared off quite so easily.

My Strongest Weakness by Brighton Walsh ~ Review

She's the last thing he needs, but she's the only thing he wants...as long as it's behind closed doors.

It was supposed to be a one-time thing. No one would find out; no one would have to know. And then once turned into twice, and twice turned into several times a week, and now pierced, punk-loving, rebellious Tia Lanning is banging Mason Brooks, the big man on campus and Mr. All American.

But banging him isn't the problem. Falling for him is. Especially when he's content to let her remain his dirty little secret.

I love this author.  Her stories are always easy to slip into, sexy to spent time with, and satisfying to finish.

Mason and Tia are strong characters that come alive on the page.  Though this is a novella and we come into their relationship after it's started, the relationship feels real.  These two come from very different worlds yet they are soul mates.  They balance each other and I cheered for them both.

I loved the message that was woven into this one.  We're comfortable with people that have similar interests, look similar and act similar.  It's a product of where we came from and who we have become.  But it doesn't have to be an ending place.  I enjoyed that.

It's a great story that you can devour in a few hours.  And you will want to devour it.

Find time for this one.  You won't regret it.

Excerpt:

That goddamn proposal has been a thorn in my side since the day I walked home with the ring. I’ve carried this box with me everywhere we’ve gone for the past three months. On every trip to the movies, every dinner out, every afternoon with the group. To the mall, on walks around the neighborhood, to the fucking grocery store. I’ve just about popped the question a dozen times, but every time, the words get stuck in my throat and I choke.

Because what if it’s not everything she thought it’d be?

Plus One by Brighton Walsh ~ Review

Source: Purchased Audiobook

Olivia hates the singles scene, so when her best guy friend, Ian, offers to be her plus one to a series of weddings she has to attend, she agrees. Although she doesn't want to complicate their lifelong friendship, she can't pass up the chance to have a steady date without the dating drama. What she doesn't expect is to now find Ian so incredibly sexy.

When Ian sees his old friend Olivia dolled up for wedding #1, the boyhood crush he once nurtured transforms into smoldering attraction. It doesn't take long for their no-strings arrangement to turn physical. But as Olivia's desire to stay "just friends" becomes clear, Ian's feelings are deepening. In the time they have together, how will Ian convince Olivia that one plus one can make for a lifelong pair?

Review...

I adore this author but novella length stories are hard to pull off and this one may have needed a bit more.

I was so excited to see it was the GUY that had the crush since childhood.  It's so frequently the other way around.  Ian is so adorable.  He loves Livy but she's clueless so he's moved on or so he thinks.  Moving away was his way of dealing.  And it works until he's stupid enough to volunteer to be her Plus one to a bunch of weddings she needs to attend.  Then seeing her in those fancy clothes and holding her on the dance floor brings everything he thought he'd moved on from screaming right back.

Livy has never looked at Ian as more than her best friends little brother but he sure cleans up nice for the weddings.  She may be a bit to stubborn for my taste since she's giving up on dating but doesn't want to consider a relationship with Ian.  But her attraction to him pushes her forward.

This turns out exactly like you would think in 68 short pages.  And while I enjoyed the story, it was too short.  I wanted more details from parts that were summarized.  It needed more angst.

It is a good quickie...if you need a few hours filled then this will do it nicely.

Paige In Progress (Reluctant Hearts, #3) by Brighton Walsh ~ Review

Source:  Received an eBook copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

She wanted a one-night stand...and then he moved in next door.

Paige Bennett is more than content with her life and what she does—and does not—have in it. She’s got a supportive family, a great apartment, and the best friend a girl could ask for; so what if her relationships expire faster than a carton of milk? After a disastrous detour courtesy of poor judgment in the boyfriend department, her plan is back on track and her dream job is finally within her grasp. Nothing can make her lose focus now. Well, nothing except the one-night stand she had with her best friend’s surrogate brother. The one-night stand she can’t stop thinking about.

Adam Reid has always been reliable...the responsible son, the loyal friend, the steady boyfriend. Two years ago, he graduated Magna Cum Laude and is well on his way to making a name for himself at an accounting firm in Denver—a far cry from working as a helper in the Mom and Pop store his parents own in Michigan. But when said store starts failing, he’s the only one who can step in and help. So reliable Adam does what he always does, and he comes to the rescue.

Paige thought Adam was a safe bet because he lives halfway across the country. But then suddenly he’s moving back to their town, and then into her apartment building, and soon he’s worming his way right into her life. If she’s not careful, he might sneak his way into her heart, too...

Review...

This book mixes coming of age with new adult sexy as two people figure out what they really want out of life.

Paige is model hot but as crass and blunt as a sailer.  She grew up with the guys as her family moved around a lot.  Friendships were easy to make but relationships were to be avoided, at least since her high school boyfriend had her following his dreams right before he broke her heart...the lying, cheating (oh never mind).  Anyway, Paige is a one-night stand kinda girl.  And Adam has had his night.   What a wonderful night it was but it's over.

So love Adam.  He's the guy who wants a relationship.  And that one night was't enough for him.  He wants more.  But Paige doesn't even want to be friends.  Of course that's a problem since they have the same group of friends.  Yeah, that's when the fun begins.

It was fun to watch Adam be patient and Paige be clueless as to what was happening between them.  Their no-date dates, his sweet names, the sexual tension, the pushy friends...it was all a blast.  I enjoyed seeing the couples from the previous books as well.  Enjoyed the way things played out.

This is a quick read for those that love the couples were one has to figure out the hard way that they are meant to be.  I may have lost some patience before Adam did but I was pretty sure I knew where this was going.  Sure enough, the ending had me satisfied.

This one can stand alone or be devoured by those who have enjoyed the first two books.  It's classic new adult with a side of figuring your a$$ out.  Nice.
