Hello, friends! I am so excited to be participating in the prompt tour for Victoria Scott's WE TOLD SIX LIES! The last week of January is devoted to Molly--and her's and your untruths.

So we ask:

WHAT IS THE WORST LIE YOU EVER TOLD?

For me, I have to think about this. I don't lie much for a couple of reasons: 

1. I am a terrible liar. Like, the literal worst. I stumble over my words and my face gets red and it's more embarrassing than effective.

2. I always feel so bad when I lie. Even when it's about things that don't matter, it sticks in my head and rots.

That said, nobody's perfect. Everyone lies sometimes. When the teacher asks, "Did you read the chapter we're covering today?" The answer is not going to be no. 

I'm not sure how to answer about my WORST lie, because all the worst lies I've ever tried to tell have never been believed. But I think my biggest lie is a good review for a book that I did not like but pretended to like because peer pressure. Actually, there are a couple of books I've done that for in the past. I haven't done this in years (I mean, I gave a JLA book 2 stars last year, y'all, you KNOW I'm not lying now) but in my earlier days I was more self conscious, especially when it came to books surrounded by hype.

I won't tell you what those couple of books were, though. I think I'll let you wonder ;)

Excerpt...

He lights a cigarette and we watch the Lilies’ and Violets’ guesthouses. I think about Lola, wonder what she’s doing in there. Question why I care. Then I look at Madam Karina’s empty flowerbed. Wonder how often she prayed for her mother to give her a fistful of violets and say she was worthy. As worthy as her sister who moved to Detroit and opened her own business.

I turn to Cain. I’ve got a bombshell question up my sleeve that I’m ready to toss into open water, take cover and wait for the salty sting. “Why do you work for Madam Karina?”

His cigarette is halfway to his mouth when my question hits him square between the eyes. He doesn’t bring the cigarette any farther. It just sits there, wrinkled, crumbling ashes onto his lap. “What do you mean? It’s a job.”

“Does she pay you?”

“That’s a pretty personal question.”

My teeth snap together. “Well, let’s try being personal for once. We’ve done enough tiptoeing.”

“You don’t want to know why I’m here, Domino. If you did, you wouldn’t want anything to do with me.”

I shoot to my feet, and my head spins. Whatever Jack put in my drink takes full effect. Cain must see how dizzy I am because he stands, too, flicks his cigarette toward the ashtray, doesn’t get anywhere near it. “What’s wrong with you?”

I put a palm flat against my forehead. “Just answer my question. I need someone to be straight with me. Just one person.”

“Well, that person isn’t going to be me.”

I spin on him and close the distance between us. “Then why are you doing this? Why come out here with me? Why try to protect me?” I point a finger at him. “Don’t think I haven’t noticed the little things you’ve done. And don’t kid yourself into thinking I need protecting.”

Cain lowers his head. “Back away, Domino.”

“Why? What happens if I push?” I shove him in the chest. I don’t know why I’m antagonizing him. Because of the champagne and drugs, maybe. Because I’m afraid of getting too close, most likely. Better to scare people off than to be left again. I grab Cain’s shirt and lean in, so close I can feel the warmth of his body. “Never mind pushing. It’s the pulling that scares you most, isn’t it?”

Cain’s hands are suddenly on my waist. He hoists me up and spins me around. My back presses against the cool clapboard wall, and he slams his hands on either side of my body, pinning me between the house and his massive frame. He brings his lips to my ear and a low rumble sounds in his throat. “You want to know my secret? Here it is. I’m dangerous. I’m a fault line beneath your feet. An asteroid barreling toward the earth. A bomb fuse begging to burn.” His lips brush my skin, and I shiver. “Just light a match, Domino, and watch me explode.”

Everyone is weird.  Some people just hide it better than others.  It's true.  And pretty clearly demonstrated in this book.

Domino can't face the pain from her past.  She hides in plain sight with her make-up and her fun colored wigs.  She's not quite real and she truly not whole.  The author does a good job of demonstrating the way people compartmentalize things to deal.  Clearly not stable and clearly in pain, this homeless girl tries to fit in and tries to be seen.  Abandoned and betrayed, she needs to feel loved and accepted.  But the one person who has been there for her the past year turns from her and she's left to make it on her own.

Enter the Madam.  What a weird one she is.  An adult this time that hasn't dealt with the pain in her life, who wants to be loved and accepted and goes about it in a really weird way.  The whole house thing just bugged me.  I'll be honest in that I was expected one thing and got another.  And while that should be good, it just wasn't this time.  I mean this book is weird.  Nothing feels real or contemporary yet it is.  And I just didn't except the amount of weirdness.  I wanted it wrapped in a metaphorical bow that made it an analogy for the way the mind works.  And it wasn't that at all.  It's just a variation on weirdness with everyone having a healthy dose.

The writing is good.  This author does have a way of crafting a story.  And while it did take me a bit to grab hold, I did end up interested in the story.  I really wanted to know the ending.  The ending that just wasn't what I wanted.  But the story itself did keep me turning the pages.

I really liked Cain.  He's a sleeping giant that was kind and put up with a lot.  Many of the girls in the house had me angry for their treatment of Cain.  I was impressed by his loyalty to Domino and his care of her.  He, too, had some compartments in his mind.  He, too, has a degree of weirdness but I still liked him.  

Poppet was another one I cared about.  Such a loyal friend.  I like Angie and her dogs.  She was quirky and a little scary.  As for the rest of the characters, they all get varying degrees of my hate.  And there you see the emotion that this book provokes.  I hate the Madam.  I hate Mr. Hodge and Eric.  I hate the carnations and most of the rest of the girls though they all deserve pity.  They formed a middle school mentality that ran the house and created the drama is many a different forms.  They all shared in the weirdness.  And they also represented the varied weirdness in us all.

What I didn't care for in this book was the lack of satisfaction when I was done.  There was no smile on my face when I finished.  There was no relief or happiness.  There was just puzzlement at the weirdness that didn't satisfactorily blend into normal.  And while that in itself says something, it just isn't why I read books.

So the bottom line is that if you enjoy the weirdness of life, roll around in it and find satisfaction in it, then this book is totally for you.  If you prefer your contemporary to wrap up in a bow at the end, you might want to skip this one.

~ Review ~ 

I've been pretty pumped about Titans for a good long while. I mean, with a freaking awesome premise like this paired with the fact that Victoria Scott, one of my favorite authors, wrote it, how could I not be? So I basically was bouncing off the walls when this book landed in my mailbox. And then the excitement returned again when it was finally time to sit down and read this baby. Lucky for me, all that excitement was 100% warranted, and I LOVED this book.

What captivated me first and foremost about Titans was the premise. A girl named Astrid racing in the Titan Derby so she can use the winnings to save her family's home (and, ultimately, bring her family together). Everything about that was something I wanted to read. The races, of course, which were intense and always so very fun to read. And Astrid's struggle, something I found easy to relate to and understand. 

Within the story, there are several characters that make it a joy to read. Astrid, the main character, who is smart and strong and a great narrator. I enjoyed being in her head while she told her story. Magnolia, Astrid's best friend, who is quirky and fun and a total fashionista. Rags, who begins as an old man giving Astrid a chance but grows to be so much more. I adored him, and his moments with Astrid were some of my favorite. Hart, who I totally admit to having a crush on. And then there's Dottie and Barney, both characters who help Astrid while also adding lightheartedness and laughs. 

And then there is Padlock. No way I could forget about Padlock. He honestly deserves his own section as one of my favorite aspects of Titans because dear goodness, I am head over heels for this steel horse. He wormed his way into my heart and I don't foresee him leaving anytime soon. Or ever. Truly, if you need one reason to pick up this novel, Padlock could totally be it. He's worth it. 

Victoria Scott's writing was stunning. The entire book had a very specific tone to it that caught my attention from the first page and kept me hanging on through the last word. It was intense and lovely and I enjoyed every moment of it. The story begins with a peek at the Titan races before Astrid joins them, and then dives into Astrid's life and what leads to her jumping on her own horse. There are several races throughout the novel, and they didn't all come at the very end, which I loved. The first race happens less than 100 pages in, and then there are a few more after that with other aspects of the story -- like training and other aspects of Astrid's life -- in between. 

Those other aspects of the story were both interesting and enjoyable, as well. Seeing Astrid's friendship with Magnolia, and her growing friendships with the people she meets in this novel, was fantastic. Astrid's family also has loads of moments, and those facets of Titans were some of my favorite to see evolve throughout the story. 

Romance is not a huge part of Titans. There are some romantic elements on the side, but the Astrid does not have a romance herself. Honestly, this was something that worried me when I began reading. I had every confidence that I'd like the book, since I was already sold on the premise, but I'm a reader who strives on romance. If there wasn't much to speak of, surely my reading experience would suffer, right? WRONG. Wrong, wrong, so very wrong. There were so many other things going on in this story (Titan races, friendships, family) that the lack of romance for Astrid was not something I was concerned about. I was pulled into Astrid's life and the races and Padlock, and fell in love with Titans. So if you're worried about romance in this book the way I was, pick it up anyway and give it a shot. 

Overall, Titans is an intense, gorgeous story that totally made me cry. I loved everything about this stunning novel, and I definitely recommend picking it up!

Hey, everybody! We (along with the rest of the V Mafia) received an email from Victoria Scott last night with a cool little peek at the Titan Enquirer, a gossip paper featured in Victoria Scott's next book, Titans (February 23, 2016)! Here's what Victoria told us about the paper:

The paper is printed year round in Detroit, but the news, and gossip, really heats up during the Titans racing season (June - August). This article is from this year's races (not the year Astrid competes), and talks about a jockey being injured on the tracks--something that happens frequently, unfortunately.
