No Falling Allowed by Melissa West ~ Review & Giveaway reminder

Source: Received eBook from publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My life just went South…

Twenty-four hours. That’s how long it took my life to flip upside down.

Wake up in bed alone after the best night of my life? Check.

Get fired instead of the promised promotion? Check.

Wealthy parents cut me off when I refuse to follow their path for my life? Check.

Now I’m in Cricket Creek, SC—a place where no New Yorker belongs—disowned and broke, with a new job that I can’t mess up. Oh yeah, and staring at my one-night stand, who happens to be the complete opposite of my type.

Southern.

Cocky.

Bartender.

Noah Hunter never should have made it back to my apartment in NYC, and I definitely shouldn’t be in his small town. But fate had another plan. Or a horrible sense of humor.

Who knew Mr. Wrong could feel so right…

We have a giveaway for this book going on HERE.

Review...

I have alway enjoyed this authors books and this one is no exception.  She is a master at getting her characters in impossible situations that feels so hopeless; then she tells a story that has you flipping the pages wanting to know how things work out for the characters you have fallen in love with.  Yep that's what happened with this book too.

I adore Noah and Grace.  Both are complex characters that have personal challenges all over the place, kinda like real people do.  The time, the place, and the situation that draws them together are all wrong.  But the feeling, the attraction and the results are all right.  Where the story comes in is how these two try to figure out how to deal with pride, circumstances and others so they don't miss this opportunity to be together.

I enjoyed the polar opposite worlds they come from.  New York compared to Cricket Creek, wealthy compared to middle class, driven to make a career to driven to make a home and they all play in trying to keep these two apart.  It's an interesting and provocative situation that causes a reader to think.  I like that.

A fast read, I devoured this in a few hours.  It's a short 200 pages and I might have wished for a bit more.  There were just a few places where I wanted to hear the conversation instead get the gist of what happened.  But that didn't stop me from enjoying this one.

When you just want a great love story between two unlikely people, then pick this one up and enjoy a few hours of pleasure.

June Embrace Release Week & Giveaway

The possibilities are endless...

Embrace has two new releases to share with you this week, so get those clicking fingers ready because you are going to want to meet these remarkable characters!

About the Book:

She’s so young, so full of life…

I couldn’t let her die…

Even if she made the world’s worst coffee.

Emily Garrett never asked to be rescued, let alone by a walking JCrew ad whose idea of fun is probably managing his stock portfolio and watching the nightly news. Then again, she never thought she would wind upside-down in a ditch after a night having a little too much fun.

Reece Montgomery never planned on being anyone’s hero, especially the foul-mouthed, bleach-blonde barista from the local coffee shop. He thinks there’s more to Emily than her tattoos, and lip ring, but getting close means letting her into his past and meeting his ghosts.

And he’s not sure she’s ready for that battlefield.

Three terrifying months.

That’s how long Kitty Laughton has been at the mercy of the scientist who experimented on her town, killing over a dozen people and giving the rest of them unique powers. But Kitty doesn’t feel powerful, especially when she learns the crazy man plans to test his research on more unsuspecting people. She refuses to let anyone else die, but trapped with no one to help her she’s out of options…that is until sexy and exasperating Nick Degrassi arrives.

Special-ops soldier Nick blames himself for Kitty’s capture, and he’ll do whatever he can to free the quiet beauty, but close quarters and a shared secret bring an attraction that neither of them expected. With the organization that started it all making mercenaries for hire, Nick and Kitty must save themselves and stop a madman…before it’s too late.

Excerpt

As they loaded into the chopper, Nick’s eyes held hers, intense amidst the activity around them. His message was obviously for her. Texted Blue and Seth, too. They’ll come for us. He kept repeating the words, as if he wasn’t sure she was listening. Or as if he was trying to reassure himself.
She shook her head at him and looked away.
They hadn’t come before, and they wouldn’t come now. But she wasn’t going to ruin this for him. It had been bad enough when her own hopes died. She’d let him hold on to his for awhile longer.
If they were going to escape, they’d need to find their own way out.
When they landed back at the complex, Dr. Fields and his orderly greeted them on the tarmac. As the changed soldiers ushered her and Nick off the helicopter, holding their hands behind their backs, they stopped in front of Fields.
“Kitty, Kitty.” Dr. Fields shook his head, as if he was disappointed in her. “You should know better.” Then he waved a hand at the orderly next to them. Without a word, the man lifted his gun and shot both her and Nick, in quick succession.
As the tranquilizer took effect, she tried to catch one last glimpse of the sky. The sun was coming up, and it had been months since she’d seen it. But her eyes closed of their own volition, leaving her again in the darkness.

Full Measures (Flight & Glory, #1) by Rebecca Yarros ~ Review

Source:  Purchased audiobook

A new adult novel from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

Three knocks can change everything…

"She knew. That’s why Mom hadn’t opened the door. She knew he was dead."

Twenty years as an army brat and Ember Howard knew, too. The soldiers at the door meant her dad was never coming home. What she didn’t know was how she would find the strength to singlehandedly care for her crumbling family when her mom falls apart.

Then Josh Walker enters her life. Hockey star, her new next-door neighbor, and not to mention the most delicious hands that insist on saving her over and over again. He has a way of erasing the pain with a single look, a single touch. As much as she wants to turn off her feelings and endure the heartache on her own, she can’t deny their intense attraction.

Until Josh’s secret shatters their world. And Ember must decide if he’s worth the risk that comes with loving a man who could strip her bare.

Review...

I really enjoyed this book and a lot of that had to do with the strong emotions it evoked in me.  I usually avoid books where I know death will play a roll.  It's just too real and books are my escape.  Something about this one had me reading it despite the death the blurb makes clear.  I'm very glad I made that choice.

I did listen to this book and I wouldn't really recommend that.  The narrator wasn't awful but she didn't add to the story either.  I tolerated the reader because I wanted to know what happened to Josh and Ember.

Stripped bare from the pain of her fathers death was just the beginning of the struggle that faces Ember.  She holds her family together and turns her own life upside down while dealing with one blow after another.  The shining star was Josh.  She only felt relief in his arms.  Of course Josh has a secret that rips any healing Ember makes apart.  This one is an emotional read.

I love both these characters.  Ember is strong and determine in the face of the overwhelming mess that is her life.  She doesn't want to start a relationship with Josh on the heels of the mess that is her life.  He's too special to her for that.  But resisting him is impossible.  Josh is amazing.  He's a player but the boy has had more than his fair share of problems.  His choices have been honorable.  I loved his relationship with Ember's little brother.  Josh is a great guy and I really cheered for him to get the girl.

It's always interesting reading a book that's set in the same state you live.  I recognized so much and wondered about a few things.  The writing was well done and the story stayed strong though it was a little long.

Once I realized what was coming, I struggled to read on but then I just read it straight through because I had to find hope.  And there is hope.  A beautiful, peaceful hope in this story of love and how special it really is.  I really enjoyed the ending.

A great read, this one will tug at all your emotions right to the very last page.

Forever Dusk by Jocelyn Adams

Since their last battle, life for the Mortal Machine—the secret-society that protects Earth and its inhabitants from dark outside forces—has become almost...normal. For everyone but Addison. The evil she’s imprisoned in her soul has begun eating away at her sanity, and despite her soul mate Asher’s efforts to hold her together, it’s causing painful and terrifying delusions.

Consequently, nobody believes Addison's warnings that Marcus, their old enemy, has returned. When Marcus threatens Asher and the Machine, she agrees to find what he seeks—a treasure that, in his hands, could be deadly.

If she relies too much on Asher, she knows he’ll likely imprison her, if only to preserve what's left of her deteriorating mind. But if she fails this final test, Earth will fall. So Addison is forced to distance herself from her love, to prevent the life she wants with Asher from being over before it truly begins.

Instead she’s reluctantly working as Jack’s personal assistant, thanks to her powerhouse talent agent aunt.

No Kissing Allowed by Melissa West ~ Review & Release Day

Source: Received an eBook copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

No kissing. No touching. And definitely no falling in love...

Armed with her besties, an embarrassing number of shots, and her list of 10 Wild Things To Do Before Adulthood, recent grad Cameron Lawson is partying it up before she starts her dream job at New York's biggest ad agency. Her last task? Hook up with a random guy. And while it's so not her style, the super-sexy guy sitting next to her is definitely game. No names. No details.

At least, that was the plan.

On her first day of work, Cameron discovers her hook-up is none other than Aidan Truitt—her new boss's boss. Talk about failing the “no fraternizing with coworkers” policy on an epic level. Especially when Aidan makes it clear their one night was only the beginning. Falling for him could cost her everything, but sometimes the only way to get what you want is by breaking a few rules...

Review...

I adore this author.  Everything I have read from her, I have loved.  Her characters are rich and full.  They feel real and I want to be part of their lives.  Her stories are captivating and satisfying from start to finish.  She's quickly become a one-click author for me.

In No Kissing Allowed, Cameron is letting loose for the first time before her first real job starts.  A kiss turns to more with a hot guy at the bar and she wakes up to him in her bed.  It's not her normal MO and she ushers him out without getting him name, though he does look vaguely familiar.  Expecting to never see him again, she's shocked when he turns up running the meeting on her first day at her new job.  Not just her boss but her bosses boss.  And no kissing is allowed between employees.

I love Cameron.  She's a relationship girl who spend four years with the wrong guy only to have him sweetly break up with her.  Feeling the need to make up for lost time but also wanting to focus on her career, she's totally taken by Aidan.  She never backs down from this man that owns her heart, she says what's on her mind and is a strong women.  While he's not a relationship kinda guy, maybe she deserves some fun times with him.  He's so worth the risk.

Aidan is a different kind of no relationship guy.  He's afraid of becoming his father, though he's far from him.  His dad (a total jerk) left him and his mom when he was young and has treated them like dirt forever.  Aidan sees the way to avoid hurting a women and child that way is to avoid marriage and family.  And it's worked for him until now.  But now, he can't get Cameron out of his head.  Staying away from her is painful.  Hurting her keeps him up at night.  Distance just doesn't work.

What I thought was interesting about this story was the turn in the story.  Most romance have a falling out and then a period of pain before something changes and things are resolved.  This story felt different.  That falling out/painful period was not the regular fair.  It's hard to explain without spoiling so I won't.  Just that I liked it...a lot.

If you've ever read Melissa West, you already know you want this book.  If you haven't had the pleasure, then make this your first.  It's an amazing read.

Review...

Here's the thing, I read a lot and it's a new and wonderful thing when a book does something different.  Yeah, I love those falling for your best-friend books.  Who doesn't but it's almost always about one of the other who's been in love forever with the man/women whore other one.  Something happens and they figure out they love each other.  Yes, I enjoy them along the way but they feel all the same.  Not this one.  This one was different.  This one was BETTER.

First, these two haven't been besties for ever and ever, just a few months.  Lyla is in her second semester of college and she met Beck in her chemistry class first semester.  She had a nerdy boyfriend from high school and so she didn't look at him that way.  They just became friends.  Beck is the man-whore of the hockey team and while he noticed that Lyla's cute, he got that she wasn't available so friends worked for him.  And he needed one.  His home life is a mess.  One he doesn't let other know about.

Then a jerk calls Lyla fugly and the list is born.  She's a nerd at heart and she's driven to get good grades.  Science is her subject and she loves her cat, Einstein.  Her early development had her mom teaching her to cover those beauties up and she's never gotten past that.  She's almost through her first year of college and all she's done is study.  A college bucket list is exactly what she needs to loosen up.

Yeah, so neither of these two thought of each other as anything but a best friend.  She's the nerd that really a cute girl hiding under lots of layers and he's a hockey player that's smarter than he lets on with some home issues.  And they're best friends.  The only true friend each other really has.  So he agrees to help her with the list, even if that includes some shopping for some edgier clothes and teaching her how to flirt with a guy.

And they both resist.  And it's adorable and sexy as all get out.

I was so in the zone that I just devoured this book and I didn't notice the time or the pages flying by.  Just pure enjoyment.

The story is so well balanced with time to build their chemistry, time to explore their attraction, time to become closer friends and time to figure out how much they mean to each other.  My stress level was low through their problems because I could feel their feeling for each other.

If you enjoy New Adult romance, you want this one.  If you love the friends to lovers trope, you want this one.  If you love well written romance with great characters you care about, you want this one.  You just want this one.

Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Carver is like Sherlock Holmes in ballet flats, but her eidetic memory is more albatross than asset, and something she usually keeps hidden. When she notices that something’s amiss at her dead-end job, she jumps at the chance to finally use her ability for good. That is, until, a man is murdered, and she becomes the target of the killer.

A detective on his first case…

Detective Eli Reyes is overbearing, pompous, way too hot for Lucy’s own good, and seems as determined to ruin her relationship with her boyfriend, John, as finding the murderer. He brings Lucy in on the case, thinking she can help him get to the truth, only to cut her loose when he realizes he’s gotten far more than he ever bargained for.

A past that won’t go away…

When memories from her childhood invade her present, Lucy discovers a mystery bigger than she could have imagined. With the killer still after her, and Eli nowhere to be found, she takes things into her own hands, determined to expose the truth no matter what—before trouble comes knocking…again.

It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another. Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn't get what she wants...

And what she wants is Evan's death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

Definitely, Maybe in Love by Ophelia London

Her theory of attraction is about to get a new angle...

Spring Honeycutt wants two things: to ace her sustainable living thesis and to save the environment. Both seem hopelessly unobtainable until her college professor suggests that with a new angle, her paper could be published. Spring swears she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that happens.

Whatever it takes, however, means forming a partnership with the very hot, very privileged, very conceited Henry Knightly.

Henry is Spring's only hope at publication, but he's also the über-rich son of a land developer and cash-strapped Spring’s polar opposite—though she can't help being attracted to the way he pushes her buttons, both politically and physically. Spring finds there's more to Henry than his old money and argyle sweaters…but can she drop the loud-and-proud act long enough to let him in? Suddenly, choosing between what she wants and what she needs puts Spring at odds with everything she believes in.

Definitely, Maybe in Love is a modern take on Pride and Prejudice that proves true love is worth risking a little pride.
