“I love this world…this is Gena Showalter at her best!”—J.R. Ward, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“The Gods of War series is my new obsession.”—Christine Feehan, #1 New York Times bestselling author

EXCERPT:

She’d put her life on hold for years, working various jobs while going to school full-time. Just when she’d completed a business degree from the University of Oklahoma—Go Sooners!—with zero student debt, she was going to kick the bucket? No! Completely unacceptable.
And die knowing she’d caused her sister’s suffering? Never.
“I’m sorry,” she said, guilt getting the better of her. Despite a top of the line face mask, her nose and lungs burned when she inhaled. When she exhaled, her goggles fogged.
“Don’t you dare take the blame. It’s mine, and I never share. You know that.” Nola’s breath no longer misted the air. A bad sign. Very bad. “I was feeling so good, I kept bugging you to add more stops to our itinerary.”
Her sister suffered from fibromyalgia. On any given day, Nola’s overactive nerves could cause extreme fatigue, total body aches, and swell each of her joints. A cocktail of medication helped alleviate the symptoms, but couldn’t cure the disease.
“Sorry, sis, but the hike was my idea.” Apparently, relaxing wasn’t her thing. Any time she’d had a quiet moment, she’d considered the avalanche of responsibility headed her way, and panicked. Which made zero sense. She’d dreamed of opening the donut shop for years. And yes, okay, her dreams revolved around Nola’s happiness rather than her own, but come on! Making Nola happy should make Vale happy. Still, in an effort to hide her panic, she’d made sure she had no quiet moments. “The blame is mine, and that’s final.”
“Fine. I’ll go halvsies with you.” Nola pretended to fluff her hair. “If we die, we die, but at least we look cute.”
“Dude. We do look cute.” They both wore a sleek coat, a downy jacket, thermals, fleece tights, a pair of goggles, a face mask, a hat and gloves. On their feet were multiple pairs of wool socks and hiking boots with ice cleats. “We could charm the flannel off a snow-biker gang.”
“Or a yeti with a Southern girl fetish. I bet we could win his heart no problem.”
“If he doesn’t want to eat our hearts first…battered and deep-fried, with melted butter on the side.” Her mouth watered. “I wonder what sautéed yeti tastes like.”
“If you start licking your chompers when you look at me… I won’t feel so guilty for debating whether your liver would pair better with a nice red or a six-pack of cheap beer.”
“You’ve seen my hangovers. Avoid my liver and go for the rump roast.” She gave her butt a little slap.
Nola chuckled, only to lapse into silence when a bitter wind nearly knocked them both off their feet. “D-distract me f-from the cold, and I’ll l-l-love you forever.” Her lips were tinted blue, her teeth chattering with more and more force.
“You already love me forever.” Just as Vale loved Nola, the greatest person in the world, living or dead, real or fake. Would move heaven and earth for her. “But I’m awesome, probably the awesomest, so I’ll take on this herculean task. Tell me your favorite part of the trip.”
“Only e-everything.” Nola shifted atop her bag, unable to stifle a whimper of pain. Then she continued as
if nothing had happened. “Well, except f-for the abandonment, starvation and h-hypothermia, of course.”
“Such trifling matters.” Helplessness pelted her insides with bullets. Rub some dirt on it and keep going. “We did everything on our BA lists.” BA—before adulting. Extending her index finger, she said, “We marveled over the northern lights.”
The chattering slowed, and Nola said, “We went on an overnight dog sled expedition that made me want to adopt a rescue pet as soon as I get home.”
“We ice sculpted. FYI, my blob was better than your blob.”
“It’s true. Oh! We also hot tubbed while drinking champagne.”
“Lastly, we hiked through the Arctic Circle.”
“Only one item remains unchecked.”
“Fall for a handsome local,” they said in unison.
Nola grinned and added, “I thought I had a connection with our guide…until he left us to die and all. But even then, he was better than my most recent online dates. Would someone please explain why modern guys send strangers unsolicited pictures of their genitals?”
“Because of course we women are catapulted into a foaming-at-the-mouth sexual frenzy the instant we catch sight of some rando’s man-junk. Duh.”
“They are so proud of their peens, aren’t they? Meanwhile I’m over here like, congrats on your average-size erection, dude, it’s maybe not quite as hideous as everyone else’s.”
They snickered.
“But,” Nola added.
“Oh, no. No buts.” Her sis was a hopeless romantic. A hopeless optimistic as well. Nola believed everyone deserved a second, third and fourth chance—which was why she wrote such an excellent How To column. How to intrigue your crush blah, blah. Vale, however, was a realist.

I've read the first four books in this series but not the rest.  I easily picked up this one and could follow it.  It is a complex world with several subplots going on at a series level but I was able to follow.

The Lords of the Underworld guarded Zeus.  When a women, Pandora, was given the task to guard a box above them, they became angry and stole the box.  Zeus was less than pleased and forced the Lords to each carry one of the demons from the box in their body to torment them.  Each story in the series is focused on one of the Lords but the overall series has the focus of how to be free of their demons.

This was Baden's story.  He actually lost his demon when he was beheaded.  The demon now torments another but Baden has returned from his death and purgatory with a new problem and mission.  He's now bound to the King of the Underworld and forced to do his bidding.  Inhabited by a beast that desires the death of everyone around him, Baden struggles to control himself.  He feels the need to be away from the rest of the Lords because he feels he failed them and because he's too dangerous.  But his missions lead him to Katarina and even greater problems.

What I loved about Katarina was her love of dogs.  She agreed to a horrible marriage to save her dogs.  And she has such a connection to them.  I really enjoyed that aspect of the story.  She was a little overbearing with Baden considering she was a human.  I guess that gives her spunk but she was annoying at times.  I did cheer for them as a couple.  Clearly they needed each other and it was just interesting watching how things would finally fall out.

I enjoyed this story.  The writing was well done and the story was vivid and full.  The world is interesting and dynamic where many stories can come to life.  I love the mythology that saturates this series.  I enjoy the strong friendships among the Lords.  I enjoy the women that bring those strong Lords to their knees.  It's a rich and intriguing series that I'm sure I'll return to.

The Darkest Whisper (Lords of the Underworld, #4) by Gena Showalter ~ Review

Source:  Purchased audiobook

He is the keeper of Doubt and his entire world’s about to be rocked.

Bound by the demon of Doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers. So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern…until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more.

Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she’d fall for a kind human who wouldn’t rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora’s box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love…

Review...

I continue to enjoy the Lords of the Underworld seres, though I do love this cover the best!  In this story, Sabin and Gwen are featured but we see and hear from a lot of the other Lords.  It's a bit different from other series' where a different couple is featured for each book.  In this one, there is always something more than passing mentions of the couples that came before and there is always details that will lead to others stories going forward.  I enjoy that.  It's nice to have the overarching story including all the Lords and there are a couple of Lords who's stories I can't wait to read because of it (Is it Paris' turn yet???).

As for Sabin, I was a little worried.  He's part of the group of Lords that broke off during a disagreement on what their purpose should be.  Since the stories up to now have been about the other group of Lords, I wasn't certain how I would feel about Sabin.  He's very much a warrior and at the beginning of this one shows very little softness at all.  But I shouldn't have worried, I completely fell for him.

Talk about a mis-match, in this one you have the solid warrior Sabin pitted against the harpy that's afraid of her harpy side and can't fight, like at all.  It's kinda funny actually.  But I don't think anyone could have made it past the demon doubt and melt the heart of Sabin and certainly no one else could teach a harpy how to fight.  I loved that.  They each brought something to the table that benefits the other and they made that into the best thing that every happened to them.  It's very balanced for a romance story.

Of course the sexy times are hot and spicy.  Sabin really has stayed away from women and Gwen has always been afraid to let herself loose.  When both of them let go, they are seriously hot together.  And while Gwen really doesn't need to be protected, Sabin is all over that job.  And while Sabin has always been able to fight alone, Gwen is all about being at his side.

I enjoyed how this one played out.  We gets lots of information about the series over-arching story as well as an interesting resolution for the couple.  I can't really say more without spoiling their ending but I will say that it has a "proving" aspect that I liked.

Still not sure that this is an obsession.  I might not know until I'm done with it and decide if I move on or re-read.  But this is one great paranormal romance series and I'm definitely enjoying it.  So if you haven't started this series, you should get on that.

The Darkest Prison (Lords of the Underworld, #3.5) by Gena Showalter ~ Review

Source: Bought audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter has enthralled thousands of readers with her Lords of the Underworld series. Discover a new side to the saga with this novella, The Darkest Prison.

Once, Atlas, the Titan god of strength, was the Greek goddess Nike's slave. Now, he is her master. And soon these sworn enemies destined to destroy one another will be forced to risk everything for a chance at love….

Review...

While I enjoyed this little side story about Atlas and Nike, it was missing something.
I think it's really hard to write a novella length book that is a complete story.  Sometimes when the novella is part of a series, like this one, it's okay because you already have the back story.  And it certainly helps that I know what's up as I go into this one.  There is little interaction with the Lords but you see some interesting developments with the Gods that I'm sure will have an impact on upcoming stories.  And I did like Atlas.
As the god of strength, he is delighted to be out of prison.  Now he's the warden for the Greek god of strength, Nike.  She tattooed her name on his chest all those years ago and now he's ready to return the favor.  I like Nike too.  She's strong and doesn't take Atlas's lip even though she is in prison.  They are well suited for each other.
It's clear they both still have feeling for each other from what took place before.  But they have hidden, no buried those feelings under anger and hurt.  They are cruel to each other.  And while I get that and it's fine, they are gods after all, I don't get what changes it.  It's a sudden change, it happens in a page turn.  I never really got what brought it about.  But suddenly they are sacrificing for each other.  It's a shame because it has a lot of potential.  It's just missing a middle.
Still reading this series.

The Darkest Kiss (Lords of the Underworld, #2) by Gena Showalter ~ Review

Source:  Purchased audiobook

She has tempted many men...but never found her equal. Until now.

Though she has lived for centuries, Anya, goddess of Anarchy, has never known pleasure. Until Lucien, the incarnation of death--a warrior eternally doomed to take souls to the hereafter. He draws her like no other. And Anya will risk anything to have him.

But when the merciless Lord of the Underworld is ordered by the gods to claim Anya herself, their uncontrollable attraction becomes an anguished pursuit. Now they must defeat the unconquerable forces that control them, before their thirst for one another demands a sacrifice of love beyond imagining...

Review...

I do feel an obsession in the making.  I am really enjoying this series and I'm on a buy spree to get all of them.  I've actually read them a little out of order so this is the fourth book in the series I've read.  While it wasn't my favorite, it still has me excited about this world and the characters that live in it.  I want more.

It takes a talented author to craft a world that can be dynamic and lend itself to so many intriguing stories.  I love that these Lords are intertwined and have such strong friendships.  They share a burden, a punishment that far exceeds their crimes.  They are there for each other, doing the hard things that are necessary.  I love their character.

For Lucien, he has given up on love.  He loved a human hundreds of years ago.  That didn't end well.  His grief at her lose caused him to scar himself so all women would turn from him.  And he's fine with that.  But Anya is different.  She sees something others haven't noticed.  She sees the man and she likes what she sees.

I love that when a Lord falls for a women, it's demon and all.  Death fell just as hard for Anya and why not?  She's perfect for him too.  It seems that the only time these Lords can agree with their demon is when they find the one women meant for them.  I do love that.

So I was puzzling this one together as I read.  I have already read book 3, so I knew how things were between these two in that book.  But I was kinda surprised about a few things.  That's always a good sign, when an author doesn't go the way you expected.

And I really enjoy that every Lord is part of the story.  We see pieces of what may come for the other Lords and some appearances from the Lord that has his happy.  I enjoy that.

I guess my only real issue was that Anya isn't my type of heroine but I still enjoyed her.  She's strong and determine.  She loves fiercely and has the confidence of the Goddess she is.  She was just a little annoying to me at times.  I do think she's perfect for Lucien so I like her too.  Because I do so love Lucien.

We'll see if I keep reading this series.  I have several of the next books so we'll see if I'm picking them up right away.
