So I'm not a fan of duets.  This one is the classic reason why.  You need the second book in your hands when you finish the first.  Gratefully, this one's book two was already out when I read it so I can forgive that aspect of things.  Yes, it ends in a cliff hanger.  Yes, it's really just one big long book that was divided into two.  But really, this one could have been a wrapped up with another 50 pages and been perfect.

I enjoyed the whole "these two shouldn't be together" relationship development.  I enjoyed the baseball aspects of the story.  I enjoyed the two main characters a lot.  Both are endearing and I cheered for both.  Both had a lot of issues in their life that make them real and dynamic.  I liked them together.  They story was fun and hot.  Quite enjoyable.

The writing was good and as I listened to it, the narration was good.  I guess I just wanted it to be over at the end and it wasn't.  That's my only really issue with it.

If you enjoy a good duet, this one is a just that.

Of course I picked this one up as soon as I finished the first.  It's the second half of the same story.  

But this one is where all the angst is.  Too much angst really.  

I did like that the characters were able to deal beyond a happily ever after part of the story.  Things were real.  I liked how most things were sorted.  The one final twist still felt unsettled but I think it's meant to be that way.

I continued to enjoy these two together.  Loved the baseball aspects of the story.  Loved the hot and sexy.  Just...too much angst.

Really though, how much angst does a character have to endure in one year of their life?  When a book starts to feel too real, I wonder why I'm reading it.  I read to avoid the angst of my own life.  And while I accept that there is going to be angst in the story, I don't want it to be this overwhelming.

I enjoy this author and it's a good story overall.  I just think it would have been better as one book - about 50 pages longer than the first - and minus about 1/3 of the angst.  That is all.

Guest Post: A Pretty Woman With Power by K. Bromberg

Ryker Lockhart: Powerful. Unrelenting. Stubborn. 

Vaughn Sanders: Defiant. Strong. Unyielding.

With those two sets of characteristics, Ryker and Vaughn are definitely oil and water one moment and then an ember met with gasoline the next. That dynamic is what made writing them and their story so much fun in my latest book, Resist. Their tale was a delicate dance though because the push and pull of the chase better be worth the reward for readers.
I often enjoy taking characters and painting them with broad strokes (i.e. Vaughn’s profession) so that readers initially question them. Then over the next 100,000 words, I love to smash their preconceived notions so that they root for the heroine. So that they are right beside her cheering her on and falling in love with the hero just like she is.

It’s not often an easy task to write a heroine, because women are often harsher on female characters than they are males. Heroes can be over the top alphas who are dominant and say all the wrong things, but once they show vulnerability, we somehow forgive them. 

Heroines on the other hand, are judged more fiercely. She’s too weak. She’s too strong. She’s too wishy- washy. She’s being a b*tch for pushing him away. Making a reader like a strong-willed female character isn’t always an easy task. So when you put two characters together who embody all of these things, it’s a delicate balance to have enough push and pull. Enough sexual tension. Enough redeemable qualities so you can love them despite their faults.

This challenge is one of the reasons I loved writing Resist (and its sequel Reveal). I don’t quite remember where the storyline came from, but I recall the furious scribbling on paper as Ryker and Vaughn’s story came to life in my imagination. Take a strong-willed woman with a risqué job and give her a real reason to need that job. Take a domineering divorce attorney who deals with love gone wrong day-in and day-out, and force him to see that there can be more than just sex between a man and a woman. That love is, in fact, possible.
Challenge accepted.

Is Resist a subtle nod to the Pretty Woman trope? I never really thought of it that way, but I can see the similarities being drawn. Vaughn (my character) and Vivian (movie character) have names that both start with the letter V. They both wear a red dress in a scene. The both work in fields that deal with selling sex for profit . . . but that’s where the comparisons stop.

Vaughn Sanders is a force to be reckoned with. Sure, she’s a madam, but once you get beneath the moniker, readers find a strong-willed woman taking measures into her own hands for the benefit of someone else. Readers will find a woman with a strong backbone and a take no prisoners attitude. A woman they can’t wait to see succeed. Sure, we throw in our hero--Ryker, a senator you know is dirty somehow, an adorable niece, and whole cast of other characters and situations and we’re left trying to figure out how it’s all going to play out . . . but the one thing we know for sure, is that we want Ryker and Vaughn to end up together.

Because hopefully when you finish Resist, like Ryker and Vaughn, you start to believe true love does in fact exist.

The lobby is elegant, with its large chandeliers, but they’re kept dim so as to allow each of its patrons some privacy. Almost as if they know I’m trying to hide some from the rest of the room for a bit. Soft classical music flows from the overhead speakers as people mill about in evening wear. There are hugs given among people, and laughs echo off the walls and marble floors.

I stand in the corner, surveying the crowd as nerves I don’t want to admit to run a riotous act within, and my mind tries to grapple for the nth time with what I’m about to do.

You’re keeping your reputation intact.

That’s how I have to look at this. That’s how I have to justify this.

Just like that, my breath catches when Ryker Lockhart waltzes into the lobby. I’m rarely affected by a man—sure, I can say one is handsome or sexy or gorgeous, but rarely does a man really catch my eye.

But there he is . . . standing in the middle of the lobby, surveying everyone around him, making my pulse race.

This is a bad idea.

He’s tall, his shoulders are broad, and there’s an air about him that screams authority while a magnetism about him makes people look his way.

And he hasn’t even spoken a word to anyone yet.

Such a bad idea.

He’s in a well-tailored tuxedo, everything black save for the crisp white dress shirt beneath it. His hair is styled, and an expensive watch glints at his wrist when he holds it up to look at the time.

Of course, that’s my cue that I’m not there exactly on time, but I give him a few more seconds to make him wait.

It’s all about power, even when I’m in a different pair of shoes.

With a deep breath, I walk toward him, shoulders square, head high, and remind myself that I’m not Vee right now. I can’t act like we’re on an equal playing field.

He has hired me. I am his.

I've enjoyed all the books in the Everyday Heroes series by K. Bromberg.  But I was really waiting for Grayson's story.  He has a son and a backstory that's filled with pain.  I wasn't sure who could possibly capture his heart.  Sidney was the perfect one to help him past his past.  

I'm a very character driven reader.  They have to capture me and feel real to me.  This whole family has done that.  Though, I will admit to Gray being my favorite of the brothers.  His wounded heart and sexy dad image are just the best.  Add the confident kid resist Sidney to the mix and things get interesting.  Sidney and Grayson live in different worlds.  Attraction will never be enough to bridge the gap.  They have a resist attitude towards each other.  She turns the other directions when a guy has a child.  And he sees too much of Luke's mom including the things that made her leave in Sidney.  How can they overcome that?

The story takes place around a sexy dad contest that Gray did not enter.  Enter his brothers to do that.  Hehe.  But the contest does force Sid and Gray together and that let the sparks fly.  Everyone could see it between them.  Yet they resisted.  There was a healing aspect to this story.  Gray from his past and Sid from claims of nepotism.  Really she needed to get out from a plan she thought was right for her but missed a big part of who she is.  It was a satisfying story.

This is a K. Bromberg story so of course the romance is good.  It's classic resistance but the scene where Luke sets the romance is perfection.  And the helicopter date was amazing.  All of this creates the right mood for some hot and steamy passion between these two.

This book can be read stand alone.  Gray's family is there and you see the other couples but nothing huge is spoiled by reading this one first.  It will only cause you to want to read the other two, so fair warning.

A hot romance that will have you cheering for this couple and hoping they can find middle ground.

 I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Cuffed,  and was excited to read this one.   But I found that I enjoyed this one MORE than the first.

Okay, lets get this out of the way.  There is this scene pretty early on that had me stunned.  That did not just happen.  Grady?  Really?  You did not just encourage her to do that.  I was sure he would stop her.  He didn't.  And I wasn't sure I could read on.  BUT WAIT.  I won't spoil it but I will say that it wasn't what I thought.  It moved the story in a way nothing else would have.  AND I ended up loving this one more that the first book.

Grady.  Oh Grady.  He's a broken man that puts on a great face.  A sexy face, actually.  Just meeting him, you'd never know the pain inside him.  But Dylan doesn't just meet him.  She's staying at his house trying to get over the dumb jerk of a rock star boyfriend while writing said rock star new songs.  Yeah, she's not pleased about it either.  But that's why she's not in LA, why she's retreated to a friend of her brothers for some much needed time away.  And let the house party begin.

I love Dylan.  She's so real to me.  Broken from a betrayal and with lots of self-image issues, she just wants to finish these songs and move on with her life.  Away from Jet the jerk.  But the studio knows she's the Jet whisperer.  She's the only way the album will happen.  So she's stuck.  And she needs the money.  So.  But the thing about Dylan is that she sees Brokie.  She gets him.  Weeks of living in the same house creates a contention between them.  A little faking it (I love that part) brings the sexy into the picture and then the growth begins.

These two heal each other.  As they see each others pain, they try to help the other see who they really are.  It's a great healing experience for the reader as well.  People are way too hard on themselves.  They accept the petty comments/actions of others and magnify that a 100% to become their own negative self-image.  But when you clear the lens and see what's real, surprise is there.  That's the best part of this story.

Yes, there are amazing sexy times.  Yes, there are ups and downs.  Yes, there are great characters that I connected to.  Yes, those characters make some much needed growth.  Yes, there is an amazing story that I loved.  But the most important thing about this book is the self-image overhaul that happens.  Such a nice, refreshing change from the average romance stories.  A step above, that's what this one is.

Can definitely be read stand alone, this one is by far my favorite.

My very favorite troupe is the fake relationship.  I've enjoyed a lot of them.  But I think I've found my favorite.  This book does this troupe so very well!

The elements that need to be in place for this troupe to work is smokin' hot chemistry.  Check.  A disagreement as to the couple working for some reason.  Check.  And the reason they should fake it has to be believable.  Double check.

Zane doesn't really believe in love.  He sees no reason to have only one women when he can have many.  So it is a strange fit for him to be starting an online match maker service.  Yeah, there are some secrets behind that.  But he's doing it and putting a lot of effort into it.  He's also a demanding self made guy that expects a lot from those around him.  And when we first meet him, he's less than charming.  Less Than Charming.  But I see more in him almost immediately.  And I fall for him.

As for Harlow?  She's trying not to be attracted to him.  Her heart is not going to get involved.  A job, that's all she needs.  She's not really a believer in love at this point.  Her dad taught her that.  And Zane is a jerk.  Hot, gorgeous and a jerk.  There is no doubt that she's struggling with keeping her heart out of things.  And watching them both try so hard not to fall was really fun.

Now one of the most important aspects of this troupe is why they are faking.  And I loved how this story was a unplanned group effort by these two.  Neither planned it and neither of them wanted it.  Both were trying to get what they wanted and put one up on the other.  And they fell right into the faking it situation that was just made for them both.  I loved that.  It was both of their faults.  It was beneficial for both of them.  It made it all the more believable.  

And of course, these two journey to get through the experience without falling for each other.  Yeah, that's not going to happen.  What does happen is that they become friends.  They care about each other.  They share secrets.  They develop a relationship while they still believe this will end.  And then there is a moment for each of them where they realize what has happened.  It's really perfection.

There were some interesting twists in this story that added to the depth of the relationship between them.  There was also a surprise that made me smile.  

I could listen to this story over and over and be happy with it.  That's when I know it's a five star book.  When I finish it and just want to read it all over again.

This book released as an Audible Original.  It releases in paperback in January 2019.  It's such a great audio book.  If you've ever wanted to give audio a chance, this one is the one to do it with.  I really enjoyed both of the narrators.  They added to the story and I could listen to Rupert Channing all day long.

I'm pretty sure this book has ruined me on this troupe.  It is the new standard by which I will measure those to come.  Love it.
