Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove #2) by Shelby Mahurin

After narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Dames Blanches, Lou, Reid, Coco, and Ansel are on the run from coven, kingdom, and church—fugitives with nowhere to hide.

To elude the scores of witches and throngs of chasseurs at their heels, Lou and Reid need allies. Strong ones. But protection comes at a price, and the group is forced to embark on separate quests to build their forces. As Lou and Reid try to close the widening rift between them, the dastardly Morgane baits them in a lethal game of cat and mouse that threatens to destroy something worth more than any coven.

The hotly anticipated sequel to the New York Times and IndieBound bestseller Serpent & Dove—packed with even steamier romance and darker magic—is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas.

Since Serpent & Dove was one of my favorite books of 2019, naturally Blood & Honey was one of my most anticipated books of 2020. My expectations were understandably high...but I ended up not loving it. In fact, Blood & Honey has been my most disappointing read so far this year.

My biggest issue with this book was the characters. They didn't draw me the way they did in book 1. Especially the POV characters, Lou and Reid. MOST specifically Reid. His development took a couple steps backward and stayed there for most of the book, which was frustrating. Lou was mostly the same, with a tiny backslide, and then a smidgen of growth. But as the two main characters, I expected more. Or at the very least, I expected to be enthralled by their journey as they figured themselves out...and I just wasn't.

The side characters weren't bad, but they also weren't as great as I felt they were in book 1. There were some characters I was done caring about that were brought back, and I didn't care for them. There were a couple carried over from the last book that I'd liked, but didn't capture my attention the way they did before.

The best character in this whole book was 100% Beau. He was funny and entertaining. My only qualm with him is that he didn't have more page time.

I was also a fan of the writing. Shelby Mahurin has so much talent. The vibes of the book were deliciously dark and witchy. Plus, she inntroduced a slew of new characters, some of which I loved and am looking forward to seeing more of. And I never stopped caring about Lou and Reid as a couple. I'd absolutely go down with that ship.

But while the writing was great, the plotting...wasn't. The problem was partly the pacing--which made the book something of a chore to pick up most of the time. But then there was the fact that the closer we got to the end, the more obvious it was that this series could have concluded with book 2 instead of continuing to book 3. I could clearly see where things were contrived in order to leave things hanging for another book. This made it harder to be pulled into the story because the decisions made by EVERYONE were frustrating.

Overall, Blood & Honey was sadly disappointing, though it did have some good parts. The writing was as atmospheric as the first book, and I'm forever in love with the romance. The character growth was a negative sticking point for me, however, along with the ending. I'm unsure whether I'll pick up book 3 at this point...but I suppose I have about a year to think about it. And with all this said, I do still ADORE book 1, Serpent & Dove.

3 stars - A disappointing read for me :/

What Are You Currently Reading? (5)

It's been a few weeks since I last made a post like this. Last time, I shared four books I was considering picking up next. Since then, I've read three of those four books! So now I feel like it's time to share what's next for me as we head into the weekend!

But first, my most recent read...

Crave by Tracy Wolff

Crave (Crave, #1)My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods…or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

How much I've read: 592 pages (the entire book)

Thoughts: THIS BOOK MADE ME SO HAPPY. I started it the day after the Midnight Sun announcement, and it did exactly what I wanted it to do--soothed the Twilight-shaped hole in my heart. It's definitely its own thing, but with enough nods to the series I love that I was on cloud 9. Plus. Man. That ending. I cannot wait for book 2!!

Now, next for me...

Blood & Honey by Shelby Mahurin

Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove, #2)The hotly anticipated sequel to the New York Times and IndieBound bestseller Serpent & Dove—packed with even steamier romance and darker magic—is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas.

How many pages I've read: 0

Thoughts: I haven't officially started this yet, but I AM starting it this weekend. A few of my best friends who also were lucky enough to land e-ARCs and I are going to buddy read it, and I'm so excited! Serpent & Dove was one of my top favorite reads of last year (and also of all time, tbh), so I'm kind of bouncing off the walls looking forward to diving into this one and spending time with Reid and Lou and all the characters I love. Will it hurt me? Probably. BUT IT'LL BE SO WORTH IT I KNOW IT.

Now I want to know! What are you reading this weekend? What do you think of what I'll be picking up?? :)

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove #1) by Shelby Mahurin ~ Review

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1)Source: Purchased.

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove #1) by Shelby Mahurin

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

Serpent & Dove was first brought to my attention by one of my friends who has been basically forcing all of her friends to read this book. She was super convincing, though, listing all the tropes the book has and raving about it. So of course I bought it. And then I read the synopsis. The next few days of my life after that were taken over by Serpent & Dove--and now it's got a solid place on my all-time favorites list.

First and foremost I've got to talk about how well this book was written. It draws you in right away and enfolds you in this dark world. Then you learn about the characters, and BAM you care about them. And you're invested in their story, their secrets and where things are going. And this is all just in Part I, btw. It was at the end of Part I where I was like "THIS BOOK IS AMAZING." So by then it'd already drawn me in and won me over and I was all in for the ride it'd take me on.

The characters were complex. I especially loved the contrast between gray area Lou and straight arrow Reid. And the supporting characters! There's not a single one that wasn't necessary and well threaded into the story. I basically live for precious cinnamon roll Ansel.

The relationships! The friendships--Lou and Coco particularly. That ride or die friendship warmed my soul. And the cuteness that was Lou and Ansel. As I said, I live for him. And then there was the familial bonds that were so interesting and I'm looking forward to exploring more in the next book.

And of course I can't not mention the romance between Lou and Reid. Their romance was many things. Enemies to lovers. A marriage of convenience. A slow, beautiful burn. To put it simply, it was everything I want in a romance done exactly right. My heart is beating all fast and I'm smiling just thinking about it. I was head over heels for this couple and I already miss them and need the sequel and maybe I'll re-read soon...

Overall, Serpent & Dove is a debut that is not to be missed! Slow burn romance, witches, friendships, and so much more... y'all need to get your hands on this book. It's definitely one that's going to be added to my frequent re-read rotation--as I said in the beginning, this is a new all-time favorite for me. And, obviously, one of the best books I've read this year!

5 stars - Everything I want in a book & more, this is a debut not to be missed!
